Papers or Posters?

I've gotten 6 submissions for the presentation of papers Sunday morning. To each submitter, I email a thank you and an inquiry as to whether they would be willing to present the material in poster form.
Only one person replied, and that wasn't Girl6.
Face it, there will be 6 papers presented orally, but there is an opportunity to present about 10 times as many posters.
It could be that many who do not attend scientific conventions are not familiar with poster sessions.
Typically, a poster displays the title, author, abstract and brief descrption of the procedure and data.
The author provides answers to visitors' queries and more detailled written material.
 
Alright... I'm totally confused. :)

Are you saying that a person can post a paper and NOT present it at the conference?

No. I'm saying that poster sessions, held each morning from 8 to 9 AM, will give people a chance to present their material to whomever is interested.
You would prepare a 20" X 30" poster with the stuff I listed above. You would bring a bunch of copies of a detailled description. You would then be available to discuss what you are presenting with other attenders.
There are usually a number of easels or bulletin boards in the room to display your poster.
I asked Hal about the availability of space to display posters a few weeks ago, but I guess he's been busy.
 
I haven't discussed with the hotel where we will do the posters session, so I don't have an answer yet. I'm sure we'll work it all out though.

Because:
1. I have no idea how many we can accommodate (see Linda's post above).
2. I have received only 7 submissions so far, including one from a "psychic". I'm thinking of advising him to stay home and just deliver his speech telepathically.
3. Mr. Randi decided that the posters would be presented between 8 and 9 AM each morning of the meeting and it's his meeting.
 
hey, I offered to do a paper....

but NNNOOOOOO teaching skeptic thinking to the primary age child just isnt important enough (Mr.Shermer wrote a book on it)

I was excited, Im guessing my poster would be equally BORING

hey, Im even funny for goodness sake (I know this is supposed to be serious, and children cant help but make for funny stories)

Um, papers before 9AM are often very, very, um, sparsely attended, Jeff.

Tell that to Hal and Mr. Randi. I did not have any input into the decision.
And they are posters, not papers.
 
I keep getting questions about the poster sessions.
The way they should go is:
You stand in front of your poster, which contains a brief description of the point of what you are presenting. You have a bunch of 2 or 3 page descriptions to hand out, detailing what it is.
You answer questions and have some breakfast.
 
can we have a showgirl from the Tropicana hand out our 2 to 3 page summary?

Edited to bump.
Now I have 14 abstracts and 6 or so proposed tiles or subjects. I need a 60 to 100 word abstract to make any judgement.
I will ask colleagues at school to evalate any proposals in areas that I am not able to judge.
I have asked all propsers if they could present a poster instead of a paper and some replied that their organization did not recognize posters are deserving of travel funding. That shouldn't be so. My U is a tuition supported private university, and they have been funding travel for poster presentations for over two decades.
Remember, the deadline for proposals is December 1.

I've been getting a number of proposals for presenting a paper, in some cases with no mention of the subject and, in others, just a title.
Sorry, but by December first , we need a 50 to 100 word abstract and a statement as to whether you are willing to give a poster presentation rather than join the fierce competition for one of the six 15 minute papers on Sunday.

so Jeff, is there really going to be "fierce competition" with a pole dancing presenter? I think the skeptical pole dance wins, and gets a time extention.

Jeff, you need to take a vote on that....

G6 and Moe could probably be convinced to donate a percentage of the take to JREF.
