Don't have detailed information yet. I just saw the headline on msn. Will fill in post as soon as it comes in.

Palestine president stated he has been in negotiations on release of Gilad Shalit, and that he was close to an agreement.

Other reports have stated "expecting his release is premature".

Will his release actually change anything at this point? Or is the military actions on all sides too far along?

what's happening in palestine right now? it's dropped completely off the UK media radar.....are israel still conducting operations?

They put out some "we are here too noises" yesterday. But yep, it has pretty much dropped from our fickle media. There was a brief mention on PM I think.

Yeah, the whole thing in Lebanon is just a Zionist plot to disctract from the real war crimes happening in Gaza.

Just kidding, but yeah, my understanding is that opperations are still happening in Gaza.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas promised freedom, jobs and homes for the people of Gaza once Israel completes its pullout.

13 September 2005

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has promised to put an end to "armed chaos" in the Gaza Strip, a day after the withdrawal of Israeli troops.

There are literally hundreds of pledges and promises Abbas has made, none have ever come true. Just a friendly F.Y.I.

I suspect you could come up with a similar list for many important politicians/leaders.

That's quite true, but there's a rather large difference between promising to lower taxes twice and failing to do so, and promising to stop killing jews hundreds of times and failing to do so.

The reason for the israeli operation in Gaza is not, after all, that Abbas promised to reduce the tariffs on israeli made goods and failed to deliver, but because he promised (repeatedly) that the Palestinians will stop abducting, bombing, terrorising, and killing jews and failed to deliver.

Here's how much power he really has over the whole thing.

5 Palestinians Die in Israeli Attacks on Gaza

Israeli airstrikes continue to kill Palestinians in the Gaza Strip – at least five on Thursday. The dead include 75-year old woman whose home was hit by an Israeli missile. Funerals have become a daily phenomenon. Two young children and their mother were laid to rest Thursday. They were among the 24 Palestinians killed in Israeli strikes the day before. It was the highest single-day Palestinian death toll in two weeks. At least 149 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s month-long assault following the capture of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. On Thursday, Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh rejected the comments from Palestinian President Mahmound Abbas that a deal for Shalit’s release is imminent.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh:

“The Palestinian government has said from the beginning the subject of the prisoner soldier should be solved on the basis of diplomatic negotiations and on the basis that there are 10,000 Palestinian prisoners suffering inside the Israeli prisons. We said that this issue should find a fair, just and equal solution.”
