The Chicago Tribune website has a current Virgin Mary apparition story in an underpass on the Kennedy Expressway in Chicago. Link, but I think you need to register:

I was struck by the equivocal nature of the last sentence in the story:

"Officials, though, said the pattern on the wall simply might be a stain caused by road salt dripping from the expressway."

I guess it's probably real, but it might be something else.
 
Well, it also might be an intentional hoax... you know the mob has gotta get in on the Mary sightings... ;)
 
Finally, a Virgin Mary "miracle" that registers in my brain as Mary. [Austin Powers voice] Though you have to admit, she does look kind of mannish. [/Austin Powers voice] *Proceeds to wash off the metaphorical filth for making that reference.*

No, it IS road salt, the miracle was the forces that caused it to be transformed into the image of the Virgin Mary. A good hypothesis is always a little flexible ;)

She looked mannish to me, too. Even more so, if you look at the image with your mind set to "dirty".
 
Sorry, I've squinted at it for five mins and I really can't see anything. Although, the general hulking shape reminded me of a Skexsi from Henson's 'Dark Crystal' film!

I did notice that, to the right of the stain someone has written on the wall: "Obdulia 4.10.05" above that it says something which could be "drawn by" or something "by" Wonder if it might be a serial hoaxer or just a bored graffiti artist? Obdulia is an interesting name... wonder what it means...

Y'know, I'm a bit dyslexic. So when I read the title of this thread, I registered it initially as "Our Lady of the Underpants". Juvenile subconcious probably, I know, but if that was REALLY the thread title then I was NOT going to find out (a) what caused the Virgin Mary's face to appear, (b) how they found it, and (c) the significance of the location...

Not too long ago, we had an “Our Lady of the Glass Box Building” . People thronged to this thing. They had someone doing Hail Marys 24/7. It was incredible.

What’s funny is, I know the general contractor for that building, he said (and I’ve seen photos) that the image was there many years before it was discovered, a large tree was directly in front of the glass. Acetic water from a sprinkler system and spray from a nearby car wash probably stained the window. When the tree was removed you could see a nice image of the Madonna.

Last year (or the year before) some dummy shattered the glass with a slingshot, they caught the little moron and gave him community service or something.

Yeah, it's kinda hard to tell the difference, being as Jesus has long hippy-like hair and all.

No that was last weeks miracle. A skid mark was worshipped by all.

Another great piece of objective journalism at the end of this one, referring to the Clearwater, Florida glass "apparition":

"Glass experts believe the image was created by a chemical reaction and corrosion of the metallic elements in the glass coating, but they could not explain why it took the shape it did. The windows were broken last year."

In the same way, I guess, that I "can't explain" why those exact lottery numbers came up last night instead of some other set.

Is it just me or is more of this stuff happening?

What they don’t mention is the half dozen or so *other* images that appear in various places on the Clearwater building. I was planning to go down there and photograph them—never got around to it.
 
our lady of the blessed salt stain

Being in the unique position of living just down the street from this "miracle", I wandered over there last night. I must say, the photographs seem to show the image in much higher resolution than the actual wall itself. It almost seems as though the photographs have been doctored to improve quality.

Very good example of media sensationalizing something and people taking it and running.

I'm not quite sure how to handle the response of the people there. There they all were, praying to a crack in the wall. Some crying silently. Some licking the substance that was coming out of the wall from their hands. Re-read that last sentence to allow the full impact to set in.

There were two other water stains emitting from cracks on the same wall nearby. Oddly emough, as I approached the scene, I mistakenly thought one of those cracks was the one in question. Shows what I know about miracles.

It's supposed to rain here later today. I wonder what will happen.
