When I was in elementary school every year for at least 4 years I saw the LONG (to me) movie "Our Friend Mr.Sun".

It was fabulous. The best of science education for small children. Mr.Sun, a cartoon, would talk about all the good things the sun does. He would also show REAL footage of him when he was "angry" (a solar storm). To me, the film of the sun just shooting up and all the different colors of red, yellow and white was just fascinating. Sure today we would probably be too cool to have a "talking Sun" teach children. But, I think from a historic view, the sun as our friend is in keeping with how primative tribes thought of the sun.

Anyone else remember a really good film or book that captured your interest in science at an early age?

I wonder where "Our Friend Mr.Sun" is now?

ISTR a series of "movies" where there were two live actors who played/were scientists; an older, bald guy and a younger one who looked like Hugh Marlow. They would talk about things like weather and biology, and would get into arguments with animated cartoon personifications of their subjects. That's about all I can remember, which is a shame because I have a certain affection for this memory fragment. Hopefully, the series will come out on DVD, the way Disney has publised their Man in Space series.

You can get "Our friend Mr Sun", "Hemo the Magnificent" and a few others in the series through Netflix.

Was it anything like this?

;)

As for me, I know I enjoyed watching them, but I can't remember any specific films I saw in school which piqued my interest in science.
I was a big fan of Bill Nye the Science guy and Beakman's World though.

I can't think of any particular books or films. There was a great kids science show in the '70's called "The Curiosity Show". It was hosted by four guys who demonstrated a number of diy experiments using readily available materials, followed by an explanation of how it all worked.

Julius Sumner Miller's "Why is it So?" was also a great watch, if a bit intimidating at first.
