Oscillococcinum touted on local NC news

I especially like this one:

Studies show 2 out of 3 patients who took Os felt better within 48 hours.
I seldomly have a flu that lasts for more than two days. One day is normal for me, and then I feel better - not cured, but better. And I use no remedy at all!

Come to think of it, this is just the same effect that the homoeopathic remedy has! That must be a really powerful concoction!

Or this:

Kristi Holmes is a believer. "I took the medicine and 5 hours later, after sleeping some more, I felt 95 percent better."

I would write and see what 'studies' the reporter is referring to.

It costs around $8 for a 6-pack and experts say a little goes a long way.
I've also heard that a spoonful of Oscillococcinum helps the medicine go down. Maybe that's why it's so effective?

Gotta love those tasty little sugar balls. $8 may seem like a lot to pay for a handful of suger, but that's because it is.

Length of illness depends on many factors, including flu strain, individual resistance and current health, etc.

What's even more pathetic about it is that she was self-diagnosed as having the flu. No medical professional even saw her, and her "illness" was apparently almost over 5 hours later.

How can people believe this garbage? And why don't the lawyers - who are quick to launch class-action suites over issues like this - ignoring these charlatans?

About 36,000 people die each year from the flu (CDC)... it's outrageous that these quacks can sell this trash when there are real steps that could be taken to save lives.

*pfft*

Oscillococcinum, schmoscillococcinum. At least NyQuil makes you a little tipsy.

...something about a squeaky wheel and some grease.

I e-mailed her about this. I spent apparently longer than she did researching it. I mentioned that WebMD states the average length for a fever induced by the flu is three days, and that Oscillococcinum is not listed as an FDA Approved active ingredient. Included was a request for references to the study, and a mention of the correlation between the average length of fever and the 48 hour window for this crap to work.

If someone doesn't say something, nobody will hear the truth.

Go for it.

Ask her if she's aware of what exactly is in it?

Oscillococcinum is a 200c potency of an autolysate of Barbary duck heart and liver. It was introduced in the 1930’s by Dr Joseph Roy, who believed that it contained a bacterium, Oscillococcus, which caused influenza. We now know that this rationale was spurious...

An autolysate is "an end product of autolysis", which is "The destruction of tissues or cells of an organism by the action of substances, such as enzymes, that are produced within the organism. Also called self-digestion."

IOW, you treat duck liver extract with enzymes, until it is no longer duck liver extract. Then you dilute it like this:

...each dilution involve mixing one part of the substance to ninety nine parts of water and alcohol. This results in a 1 C potency. Then one drop of this dilution is taken and diluted in ninety nine parts of water. This results in a 2 C potency (C standing for one hundredth part). The number of times the substance is diluted results in the dilution, thus a 200 C has been diluted to one in a hundred parts 200 times.
