Hypocrite Nigel Farage rudest man in Europe
The First Post

...

Already known in Brussels for his brash and abrasive style, Farage launched a scathing personal attack on the new President of the EU Council, Herman van Rompuy, in the European Parliament, one which left MEPs reeling in shock at its sheer nastiness.

"Who are you? I'd never heard of you, nobody in Europe had ever heard of you," Farage proclaimed. He said van Rompuy had the "charisma of a damp rag" and compared him to a "low-grade bank clerk". For good measure he also insulted the EU President's homeland, saying Belgium was "pretty much a non-country".

...

Hey UKers and EUers! Give us a little context please.

1) What kind of paper is The First Post?
2) What is the UKIP? Don't just tell me they are 'gits'. Some detail please.

UKIP(The UK Independence Party), known (perhaps unfairly) as 'The BNP in blazers' are a marginal right wing party who wish to remove the UK from the European Union. They also are a party of AGW deniers and mostly charming, if not confused ex-Tories.

Here's a picture I took of one of their campaign posters in June:

I suspect he did this to get some press coverage, they don't seem to have had much since the euro elections.

I've never heard of The First Post, but the story has been covered by the BBC and Farage has defended his remarks very publicly - see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8538281.stm. There's absolutely no doubt he said what he's reported as saying; I heard a recording of his comments broadcast on the radio yesterday. I agree entirely with UW's description of the party, who are hovering on the fringe between the right wing of the mainstream and right wing extremism, and seem to have little contact with reality; the classic example was Joan Collins, who in 2004 briefly became a high-profile member of UKIP while resident in France, but seemed unable to see the irony.

BTW, they are gits.

Yes, but more the kind of git your lovable old grandfather turns into when he starts raving on about how 'they' are banning Baa-Baa Blacksheep because of the ethnic connotations before forcing the family to watch the Queen's Speech, mumbling something about kids today.

It's the party of Express readers, not The Morning Nazi.

Nigel Farage fined for verbal attack on EU president

Nigel Farage has been fined 10 days' MEP allowances – about £2,700 – following his attack on the credentials of the European council president, Herman van Rompuy, last week.

The Ukip MEP was today summoned to see the European parliament's president, Jerzy Buzek, who demanded that he apologise to Belgium, its people and its former prime minister for his remarks.

When Farage refused, Buzek said he was considering sanctions, including possible suspension from the chamber, against him.

...

Buzek said he defended "absolutely Mr Farage's right to disagree about the policy or institutions of the union, but not to personally insult our guests in the European parliament or the country from which they may come".

"His behaviour towards Mr Rompuy was inappropriate, unparliamentary and insulting to the dignity of the house," he added.

He said that, as a former member of the Polish Solidarity movement, he had fought for free speech as the "absolute cornerstone" of a democratic society.

However, he added: "With freedom comes responsibility – in this case, to respect the dignity of others and of our institutions.

"I invited him to apologise, but he declined to do so. I have therefore, as an expression of the seriousness of the matter, rescinded his right to 10 days' daily allowance as a member."
