The state visit to Germany this week, with a public appearance in front of the Brandenburg Gate, will most probably offer transatlantic reassurances and deliverables from the United States as echoed by both Democratic and Republican presidents in the past; but instead, the current American president should take this as an opportunity to bring Germany out of its shell and persuade it to act as a legitimate power in world affairs.

I just thought the title on CNN main page was pretty funny. When referring to Germany's past, it should be kept in mind a previous US president expected Germany to eat lead.

Yeah, first they re-educate us into unpatriotic hippies and then they want us to take part in wars of aggression to achieve world domination again. :boggled:

Didn't you need America to save you from Nazi and communist world domination though?

And if the world has never been better doesn't that mean American world domination is a good thing?

They are missing two important things:

Yes, obviously Germany should take the lead in Europe, but also China needs to be contained by another power with influence over there somehow. I vote for Japan.

On the North African front there could be an Islamic resurgence in Egypt, Libya and Somalia. I suggest a European country nearby with some kind of experience would be worthwhile; maybe Italy.

With an Axis of Good: Germany, Japan, and Italy, the world will be safe in a new image fascisted fashioned by the plucky great nations of the world. I live in Japan, by the way, and I can tell you they know how to get the trains running on time!
