GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (CNN) -- In one of his first acts in office, President Obama has ordered the U.S. government to suspend prosecutions of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay for 120 days, a military spokesman said Tuesday.

Papers filed at the U.S. prison camp said the request is made "in the interest of justice and at the direction of the president of the United States." It seeks a delay in proceedings until May 20.

"The judges will receive the requests and review them,
and we anticipate a ruling soon," said Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon, a Defense Department spokesman.
My prediction: Military tribunals against top honchos like KSM proceed, the shorties get released as a gesture of goodwill.

I sincerely hope Obama actually thinks very carefully about what he does with these people. This is an incredibly bad area to go wading in to in order to win quick political brownie points, and it could come back to bite the US in the behind big time.

It could also destroy his presidency. He has no idea of the firestorm that would ensue should he release one of the guys and they end up killing Americans.

And what about the couple dozen who cannot be repatriated? Are they part of the "shorties"?

Assuming Obama goes through with his intent to close the detention camp, where are these folks going to go? Will we welcome them?

There are muslims in America and some mosques might take them in. The FBI would have to keep tabs on them. It's not a great alternative but all of the choices are unpalatable ones.

YOu simply cannot be serious can you?

2,688 days without a major terrorist attack on Bush's watch after 9/11 and in less than 12 hours Obama is already throwing it all away.

Everyone always seems to reflexively want Gitmo shut down and it always makes me wonder if they've thought through the consequences of it. Frankly it seems like the idea that Gitmo is some sort of indescribable evil seems to be more a meme than a rational position.

However Obama, I believe, wouldn't do something like this without a plan so if he is shutting it down then he probably has a plan in place on what to do regarding trials and repatriations/asylums.

What are the consequences of locking people up indefinitely without a fair trial?

Ask the German and Japanese, American, British, Soviet POWs. The only ones scheduled for trials are those that have been charged with war crimes. The rest are in limbo because their own countries deem them to damned dangerous to take back.

"...as false the choice between our safety and our ideals..." Some guy in the USA.
What "ideals" have been sacrificed for safety? At least provide the list of transgressions your post implies.
