Obama’s Bipolar Approach Towards Climate Change

With less than two years to go before his final term in office has expired, President Obama has already sealed his fate with regards to his legacy on climate change.

When historians look back and assess his actions on what could be one of the biggest issues of his presidency, they will undoubtedly be using the term “disappointing” quite a bit.

The main problem is not that he has ignored the issue as his predecessor, President George W. Bush, did; it is that he has consistently said one thing about the threat of climate change and then done the exact opposite of what he has called for...

You could also read him from the "right-wing" side of things and think he has done too much. Just pointing out that he only really had a chance to pass any significant legislation on the matter in the first two years, before the 2010 mid-terms. I do think those first two years fell short on action, but on any lack of action since then I just have to give him a pass.

If he had taken strong, compelling steps during those two years, what's happened since wouldn't much matter. Since he didn't, I give him no pass. You don't acknowledge the problem and then waste angst over a pipeline that should have never even been given consideration, just cancelled. You don't waste time on "clean coal," you institute a carbon tax. All he has done is try to pander to a fringe right constituency who doesn't want to agree with him on anything and would simply prefer that he confess his desire to destroy America and resign from office.

You seem to confuse the office of the President with that of Dictator....

You seem to underestimate the abilities of a strong President with the support of both houses of congress and the support of most of the population, large sections of the business community, and all of the science and academic communities.

Wasn't it only days ago people were trumpeting how successful BO had been in making USA take action on climate change?

I must be mistaken.

Look how hard it was for him to get anything approaching health care reform!

He took office at a time when energy prices were going up, the world was in financial meltdown and, sadly, quite a few americans didn't trust scientists with all them book smarts.

I did qualify that, I said "a strong President with the support of both houses of congress and the support of most of the population, large sections of the business community, and all of the science and academic communities." Obama is a president, but that's about as close as he gets to meeting the qualifications I posited.

More successful than any other administration in U.S. history, unfortunately that's like arguing that pig **** is worse than bull ****. Definitely true, but still only a marginal distinction.

Is nothing happening? Good. A powerful economy driving technology forward saves magnitudes more lives, even with climate change and having to move inland slowly over hundreds of years, than slamming on the brakes will.

I am for the complete Trantorization of Earth. Why? Because I love poor people and want them to be better off in health and wealth.

What does Trantorization mean?

It's not in any dictionary I have access to and a Google search only seems to want to show your usage on this forum.

Asimov's foundation series

No spoiler alerts, I'll try to protect those who have not read.

Trantor was the capital planet of the Empire in that series, Crust of planet has been completely replaced with human construction.

This is probably the biggest blunder of his entire presidency. He had both houses of congress, but instead thought giving concessions was a good way to start a negotiation with Republicans. Obama was a great campaigner, but is and was a terrible negotiator.

That's rather like saying the mother of a little kid that refuses to eat his vegetables is a terrible negotiator. Obama was dealing with people who's mission it was to refuse to negotiate with Obama and then claim that the president won't negotiate.

So? A good bargainer doesn't start off by bargaining against themselves and making concessions right away. Go for what you want, and make concessions if you have to. When you have both houses of congress on your side, let the GOP cry about how you won't negotiate.

Fully agreed, but then, though a progressive, I am Republican.

Are you serious? Are there not still Republicans who swear up and down that Obama is hellbent on destroying the economy through climate change in order to bring about the coming Communist Caliphate?

I've seen Republicans swear the same thing about McCain and Romney as well, so I'm not too surprised at such idiocy.
