Came across this wonderful defense of Haggard. We should be applauding him, apparently.

If a religious leader has a personal inclination toward homosexuality - and nonetheless can look past his own inclination to defend the institution of marriage and to affirm its benefits for the raising of children - why should he likewise not be honored for his intellectual firmness and moral integrity?

See how easy it is to turn vice into virtue? I also love this bit...

The other publicly reveals his homosexuality, vilifies traditional moral principles, and urges the legalization of drugs and prostitution.

Yes, because all homosexuals support drugs and postitution.

I don't think his intellectual firmness is at issue here, but rather his hardness.

Why did the wordsmiths at NRO chose that exact word, firmness? Why not rect(um)itude? Intellectual consistency? Honesty? Fortitude? Going for the cheap pun?

*shakes head*

Oh no, I said head!

*The local rugby squad yells out: "Head? I'll have some of that!*

Quiet, you! :p (Bloody voices in my cranium! I need some stronger meds.)

So, where was I?

Yes, because all true homosexuals support drugs and postitution.
Fixed that last bit. No need to thank me. :)

I was listening to Mehlman being interviewed on PBS news last night. When asked how important if the Haggard gay thing to the voters, he basically said that is was not important and only really an issue in Colorado.

When asked about the Kerry botched joke. Mehlman described how very "disappointed" he was and the voters should understand that this seems to be a policy of the Democrat party (dissing the military).

He also mentioned that the GOP will win and retain both houses in Tuesday's election.

Oh that NRO. For a second I thought you meant the National Reconaissance Office.

Which man is leading the more moral life? It seems to me that the answer is the first one. Instead of suggesting that his bad acts overwhelm his good ones, could it not be said that the good influence of his preaching at least mitigates the bad effect of his misconduct? Instead of regarding hypocrisy as the ultimate sin, could it not be regarded as a kind of virtue - or at least as a mitigation of his offense?

You know someone is lower than **** when they submit that hypocrisy should be regarded as a virtue.

Republicans have been an utter disaster for this country. Rightwing scum your time has come.

The thing about the NRO's The Corner, group blog, though, is that the writing is quite good and fun to read. It reminds me of some of the best jref forums, except of course with a conservative slant.

The most fun was reading their early, very critical reaction to Harriet Miers and to Michael Brown's handling of Katrina.

If a man has intercourse with a man as with a woman, they both commit an abomination. They shall be put to death; their blood shall be on their own heads.

Are you suggesting that the op souldn't be taken seriously? I don't see how something being "good" or "fun to read" impacts the validity of the assertions made by the author.

Isn't he only on leave? One can look at this as a great moment for diversity, in a sense. This Church apparently openly accepts having a gay (or bisexual) pastor in its senior leadership.

And a meth fiend to boot.

Well then it's a good thing that wasn't what I was suggesting.;)
