It was all a ploy to make a Gingerich/Romney ticket look "mostly harmless".

Over the next few weeks, I suspect we see Gingerich and Romney take 1 and 2 positions respectively and the rest disappear, as intended and calculated from the first.

I can see this happening, but more Romney/Gingrich than the reverse. Gingrich would do anything to be relevant again, even accepting second banana. And Romney and Gingrich both realize that stuff you say during primaries doesn't mean squat, so they're together on that. Plus, Newt doesn't really want to do any heavy lifting, so he's perfect for VP.

Not only will it make them look harmless. By contrasting themselves with the extreme positions taken by Perry,Bachmann,Cain,etc..they can spin themselves as "mavericks" who weren't afraid to buck their own party's positions.

I think Newt will have a hard time shaking the "Washington insider" label..."coporate hack and shill" also comes to mind...

Especially as he tries to explain what he got paid between $1.6 and 1.8 million from Freddie Mac for.

His answer to the "Washington insider" charge is,
"It reminds people that I know a great deal about Washington and if you want to change Washington, we just tried four years of amateur ignorance and it didn't work very well," he said. "So having somebody who knows Washington might be a really good thing."

That ought make the Tea Baggers happy!

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Iowa Republican caucus-goers shows Gingrich with 32% followed by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at 19%. Georgia businessman Herman Cain, who led in Iowa last month, drops to third with 13% of the vote. Texas Congressman Ron Paul draws 10% of the vote in Iowa, while Texas Governor Rick Perry and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann each grab six percent (6%).

Gingrich replied, when asked about the 1.4-1.6 million: I don't recall how much I was paid, besides I merely consulted them on strategy....he must have really impressed that board
with his consultations (he claims he did NOT lobby!) to be paid such a large amount of money....and doesn't recall how much? Does anybody believe such outright evasiveness?

I'm flabbergasted but amused.

I'm pretty sure that just like Perry and Cain this is temporary.

It would be hilarious if it isn't though.
