Detroiter faces charges in sword slaying of plant co-worker

DETROIT - A 30-year-old man, who said he'd been bullied for months at the plant where he worked, fashioned a piece of metal into a sword and killed a co-worker, police said.

"We don't know at this time if this was a case of work rage or just two employees not getting along," Major Crimes Section Inspector Bill Rice said Thursday.

The slaying occurred shortly before 11:50 p.m. Wednesday at Peerless Metal Co., in the 6300 block of West Fort at Livernois. When officers arrived at the plant they found the body of Anthony Williams, 40, lying on the shop floor. He almost had been decapitated in the attack.

Police arrested the Detroit man, who was sitting in a chair about 20 feet away from the body smoking a cigarette and drinking a beer. His clothes were blood-splattered and he was the only other person in the building, police said.

Employees told police that the suspect and Williams had been at odds for several months, but they didn't know what started the problem between the two men. They told police that when the suspect arrived at work Wednesday evening, he got into an argument with Williams.

Wow, the made the sword at work and killed a man with it! I think it's going to be hard for him to argue it wasn't premeditated.

Some years back, I read an article on guns which had been fashioned by inmates in various penitentiaries. These ranged from simple "Zip-gun" type devices to a functional semi-automatic firearm that had been produced in the prison machine shop!

On a similar note 60 minutes had a segment on tribesmen in the hills of Pakistan who pride themselves on manufacturing copies of modern firearms using nothing but hand tools.
Using simple files, human-powered lathes, and similar items, they are able to produce functioning copies of AK-47s and similar military weapons.
Bullets for the hand-loaded ammunition are made by carefully drilling a bullet-size cavity in a piece of rock, then using a mandrel to pound in a copper disc for the jacket. The lead is melted and poured into the formed jacket, and viola, an FMJ!

It seems like they would get off 1 shot at the enemy, then have to pause for a week to make another bullet!

I can spend 1000 dollars on a handgun made with precision CNC machinery and hand-fitted. This gun might have to be returned to the manufacturer to fix a variety of problems with feeding ammo reliably.

While I have no doubt that somebody can build a semi-auto handgun from scratch without even buying a pre-fab receiver, I doubt these guns are combat-worthy.

This was many years ago, but as I recall the local police firearms lab tested the thing and it worked, at least through the 6 or 7 rounds the inmate had smuggled in.

During WWII, the USAAC and RAF pilots that were held as POWs were able to fabricate uniforms, produce forged identity papers, and even cast uniform buttons, all while in a "maximum security" prison.

They also built a radio out of coconuts and got Ginger a screen test, but they never worked out how to fix that hole in their boat.
