North Korea announces nuclear test

(Filed: 03/10/2006)

North Korea has said it plans to carry out a nuclear test, in the latest blow to efforts to convince the Stalinist state to end its drive for nuclear weapons.

Pyongyang said in a statement that it needed to strengthen its deterrent in response to increasing hostility from the US.Taro Aso, the Japanese foreign minister, strongly condemned the announcement, saying it would be "totally unforgivable" for North Korea to go through with its plan.It is the first time the North Korea has publicly announced its intention to conduct a nuclear test, though it has long claimed to have nuclear weapons.

Maybe they will just blow themselves up like they did with their last missile test.

Great, just when things were becoming a little bit better between Japan, China and Korea this happens. Now Japan will react strongly and China and South Korea are not going to just be there.

I just really hope that this is just a bluff, nuclear weapons should not be available to anyone, but even less to Kim Jong-il.

We could nuke 'em just as they test it and try and convince the world that's exactly what happened.

:D

They've been working on their little nuclear pit for quite a while. Hopefully the radiation won't drift in my direction.

On the bright side, if they do successfully -- or even unsuccessfully --
conduct a nuclear test, whatever patience is left for the Sunshine Policy amongst the South Korean populace will whither and die. It may finally force President Roh to grow a pair. Or not.

Just in time for Japan's new Prime Minister to make his case for amending their pacifist constitution.

Makes one wonder if a private message was conveyed a few days back to Mr Kim indicating Japanese response as "toned down." Sort of a green light to set up his own agenda at home.

Probably not, but an interesting thought.

Current satellite surveillance capabilities probably make that a non starter, unless US, Russia, and a few others got into a nice conspiracy to defraud the world on that score. All they'd need would be a few extra squibs, 4' rebar with 3" centers, and some thermite. :D
