North Korea threatens US with nuclear strike!

Not all of them, just the short-arsed goon at the top of the pyramid.

Speaking of Pyramids, have you seen the pyramid shaped hotel in their capital.

It was technically the world's tallest hotel, but it has never been more than an empty shell. Apparently, tour guides used to show it off as a soon to be completed monument to the revolution but now it is not shown on maps and completely ignored by tour guides.

Yes, I did. And I wonder how they can completely ignore it. It would be like ignoring the Taj Mahal while standing beside it...

It certainly would make an attractive target for a USAF pre-emptive air raid.

Yes, it would be a psychologically damaging gesture, but one which would be unlikely to lead to much actual death or destruction.
Then it's an even MORE perfect target. ;)

If a missile is used to demolish a building, how long until a video is made claiming it was really a civillian plane piloted by Al Qaeda?

Speaking of Kim's "government"....They had a film clip of the man on CNN a couple of days ago, flanked by a couple of his generals. Each military man had so many medals on his chest that they would have provided a fairly effective defense against knives or firearms.

It seems to me that the sign of a tinpot dictator is the elaborateness of the military uniforms..... Those various African dictators seem to be guilty of the same thing, and the officer corps under Mussolini had ostrich plumes and epaulets that hung down to their elbows.

I once checked. While the president of the USA is officially the head of three or four organizations (e.g., supreme commander of the armed forces, president of the USA, and perhaps another one or two), Kim is, officially, the head of close to 1000 titles.

He's the head of everything because he trusts no-one else to be the head of anything. Paranoid schizophrenic, I'm betting.

And I can't help but think that a few hundred thou' in the right military pocket in NK will bring about a very rapid regime change, and "Dear Leader" will vanish just as fast as his erstwhile detractors did. Then, perhaps, sensible talks may prevail.

Interesting to compare the two news stories in the OP. Fox plays up a nuclear threat even though I see no evidence of NK threatening to actually use it's nukes and starts with a quote from John Bolton complaining about NK's threatening manner of diplomacy (pot-kettle-black, John). The Guardian story gives quotes actually from the NK representatives explaining their position and, it seems, emphasizing NK's right to pre-emptive strikes when it feels it's threatened, echoing the US' claim to the same.

He runs everything because, sillies, he is all knowing, all seeing and an incomparable light to the people of the world, the sun of the 21st Century.

Before we get too bent out of shape about the threat...even they know that a missle or bomb launched against the South, Japan or even the U.S. and whether successful or not would result in the total destruction of N.Korea...beleive me, Kim is a survivor not a suicide bomber. He's Stalin and Mao, not Che.

The issue with nuclear proliferation has never been that a nuclear nation would itself launch a nuclear attack at another country, but that it would manufacture a bomb and then sell it clandestinely to a terror group who would detonate it in another country.

North Korea is desperate for funds.

If a suitcase nuke were to go off in London or Paris, against whom would we move? North Korea? Iran? Pakistan? Could it have been nuclear material that disappeared form the Soviet Union when the wall fell? What if the terrorists who took credit for the blast were all incinerated in the blast, the only evidence of their responsibility the videotape they sent to Al Jazeera just before destroying Rome, and leaving no evidence of how they got the bomb?

That's the nightmare scenario of rogue nuclear states.

Whatever happened to that poster that used to take up for NK in a serious way...showed us a picture of NK's (only?) swimming pool, told us the satillite photo's of a dark NK was because they were doing an air-raid drill.

I liked that guy.

Well, I spent quit a while studying pro-nK South Korean groups, and that is basically the same thing they do. So I could probably fake it pretty well, if you like. You know, for entertainment purposes.

Nuke North Korea if it happens. Use the "that's where the evidence points to" reasoning. This would require a formal change in policy. I suggest drafting a letter for the President's signature.

Dear Norkers:

If a nuke goes off anywhere in the world, we will blame you. This policy is our way of embracing the "blame the US" meme as a valid political policy mode. What's good for the goose, and all that. Our response will not be limited to conventional means. Its scale we leave to your imagination. If your bunghole puckers at this prospect, we can ship you all of the Preparation H(TM) you desire, as a valid UN approved medical supply.

You are now free to move about the planet in pursuit of random nukes.

This letter will self destruct in 30 seconds.

Yours in haste (I gotta go ride my bike)

GWB
