North Korea and the US

The US and North Korea plan to hold talks next week:

There is one thing I never fully understood: why doesn't the US want to have talks with North Korea by itself? How come we always insist that other countries join us?

The US have no diplomatic relations with North Korea, thus they cannt talk to each other on a diplomatic level.
