Came in the email this morning:

Dear Valued Client,

Microsoft has announced an important change in the Internet Explorer (IE) browser as a result of their patent dispute with Eolas Technologies Inc (Eolas). This change will affect the performance of Flash advertising on the Internet. In an effort to assist you with understanding and handling this change, we strongly recommend that all you carefully read these materials and take appropriate action.

{snip}

Eolas holds a license on a patent from the University of California on a method for embedding and invoking interactive applications such as applets and plug-ins in web browsers. The patent affects the ways in which the browser displays objects such as Flash movies.

As a result of the changes that Microsoft has made due to this patent dispute, websites and vendors must modify the way that objects are written into web pages to ensure that their Flash applications and advertising work as intended in the new version of IE. Objects must now be written into web pages from external files instead of directly within the HTML code. If objects are written directly into the HTML code (as opposed to an external file), a visitor is required to activate the object before any interaction can occur. In the case of Flash ads, this means that visitors will have to click an ad to activate it before they can click to the destination website or interact with the ads in any way. Although Flash ads are the most prevalent form of rich media advertising on the web, all other embedded objects will be similarly affected, including Java applets, media players, etc.

Oy vey. :covereyes

Anyone else heard this or have more info?

I'm really surprised that patent is valid, but I guess if MS is giving in then it must be.

I always thought that software patents were a load of bull-pucky.

From a (lazy) webdeveloping point of view:
This sucks.
If I read the MicroBlows official tweak refered to by the Register, I now have to add a ****-load of Javascript to activate my Flash to make sure that the idiots...erhm....unenlightned masses who still uses IE can read flash based website content......

This is going to be fun....NOT...

Especially since my petproject is to ultimately develope a CMS combining a database with Flash....
