This is an interesting case because of motive. The evidence looks solid, and I think the police got it right.

It seems this guy had a crush on the victim. So he lured her to an encounter with the idea that he would kidnap her and stash her somewhere, and then be the hero who found and rescued her, and thereby gain her affection.

But he ended up suffocating her, and she was killed.

Very often, especially with wrongful convictions, we are faced with a criminal theory that is not plausible, but guilters then counter with proven cases where the motive seems equally implausible.

This case is outlandish, but from what I know of criminal behavior, yeah, I totally believe it.

If you haven't followed this story until now, allow me to present Kyle Dube, a criminal with a devious but limited mind. Now on trial in Maine.

a strong case at this point

I agree that the evidence seems strong at first blush. His attorney claims that he was home at the time of the murder. Obviously, if his attorney can establish an alibi, that changes the picture considerably. As for the prosecution's theory, it is not all that outlandish to me. Consider the 2014 University of Virginia Phi Kappa Psi fiasco. A young woman made up a gang rape story (a story that now appears to be entirely false) for much the same reason, and she was willing to talk to a national reporter about it.

Sorry, but a 21-year-old male after a 15-year-old girl? Wrong written all over it.

Not too much detail on the mentality of the accused. I note from the linked article that the parents of the deceased said she couldn't date anyone over 17.

Oh, I don't know. She was a cute girl. I'd have hit on her when I was 21, if I thought I could get away with it. Sorry to say, that would have been my only concern.

But I wouldn't have kidnapped her and smothered her with duct tape in bonehead scheme to play Sir Lancelot. That does have wrong written all over it.

I think he was 19 at the time. It happened 2 years ago. Her age is given as it was when she died, his age is given at the present time.

Fantasies of getting the beloved to look at you when you rescue her/him from danger are common at that sort of age.

Ah. I forgot: those that have passed become frozen in time at that instant, while the rest of us shuffle along the trail of aging.

What is the evidence against this guy? I read Charlie's link but all I saw was he set up a fake FB account. Nothing about forensics, no confession and a cast iron alibi (:D).

The Daily Mail report on it goes into some detail and he sounds guilty, based on their limited coverage of the evidence:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...e-man-accused-luring-teen-Facebook-opens.html

DNA under her fingernails and at the scene of the kidnapping, the Facebook account that set up the meeting was traced to his home, his phone was in the area of the abduction at the time and there are claims that he told people he did it and hinted to the police that he'd done something, when reporting to jail for an unrelated offence, for those that either don't want to read the Mail or can't be bothered to.
It'll be interesting to see what the defence offers up.
