NHS Alliance chairman attempting levitation?

Thanks Asolepius. I work in the NHS and it can be fertile ground for uncritical thinking. Hopefully NICE will be an effective BS deflector.

Your are right AgeGap, but actually the NHS Alliance is not part of the NHS. It's just an association of primary care functional units. NICE is pretty powerless when it comes to sCAM. Its job is to evaluate treatments for cost-effectiveness. This can only be done if effectiveness has already been demonstrated. In addition, the government has steadfastly refused even to refer sCAM for evaluation by NICE. There is much more detail on this in my chapter on the politics of CAM in the book `Healing, Hype or Harm?'.

BTW I don't get royalties from book sales - proceeds go to charity.

It certainly implies that it is (my emphasis):
No other NHS body has PCT chief executives and other senior managers, doctors and practice managers, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals, along with Board chairs and members, all working together to improve the health service.

Considering the furore that the sCAMmers tried to whip up about a certain letter using an NHS letterhead...

Point well taken Mojo. They are not alone in this - see also the NHS Trusts Association (also mentioned in my book chapter). Their NHS Directory of Complementary and Alternative Therapists is a thing to behold.
