From Merck..you know...one of those evil Big Pharma institutions.

Gardasil. Where DO they come up with these names?

Anyway, it is a vaccine from HPV, or the human papilloma virus. It is the main cause of cervical cancer. The thing is, you would have to vaccinate BEFORE people become sexually active. Mainly young women, but guys too, as we can transmit the disease.

Merck is claiming 100% efficacy. 100%!

First of all, they're expecting heavy protest from religious groups...

? Huh?

Secondly, being a skeptic, and having read this in the local rag, I was looking for a little more info. 100% is a pretty bold claim.

Thirdly, who WOULDN'T vaccinate their child?....(I know they're out there...but it's coming available in 2006...and if I ever have a daughter, you can bet the farm she's getting it!)

Because, of course, it is only the fear of getting a horrible disease that stops those slutty big-busted 14-year old girls from having sex with every male in sight. Vaccinate them against these diseases and the whole of society will drown in a tsunami of filthy bodily fluids!!!

I thought everybody knew that.

I'll bet it's got thiomersal in it, so that's slow-witted slutty big-busted 14-year old girls.

It's gonna be a vaccine apocalypse.

I think we need a smiley here in case any innocent bystanders are reading: ;)

Boys need to get the vaccine too, since they can transmit HPV to their female partners.

This recent information is from a Phase III trial. AFAIK Merck has not yet submitted an NDA (new drug application) to the FDA. It will be 2 to 3 years before this vaccine is approved--if it is approved--and put on the market in the US. In the meantime, practice safe sex. Don't depend on miracle drugs...the miracles have a way of losing their glow when they are distributed to the general public.
