New supernova 25 million year away

As an aside, I'll note that this supernova won't get bright enough to see naked eye and poses no threat at all to us here on Earth.

Yeah, right!!! That's what TheyTM want you to think. It's a precurser to 2012!! We're doooooooomed!!1!!!

Shouldn't that be "25 million years ago"?

I think it makes a more interesting headline that way.

Typo that should have been 25 million light year away (which also is 25 millions years ago). The title then got bastardised and inbreeded between those two sntences :P.

If a mod want to change it fine, but I don't see it as important. I jsut wanted to spread the news to hthose which don't visit astronomy site often and might be interrrested.

Only teasing. I kinda liked the combination of "New" and "25 million years ago" in the same sentence.

It does put things in a different perspective.

I tried to spot the parent galaxy (M101) last night. Total bust :( If the supernova gets to magnitude 10 it will be well within my scopes reach.

M51 at 23 million light years had a supernova in June. Alas I did not see that one either :(
