Uganda's president has signed into law a bill toughening penalties for gay people and criminalising those who do not report them.

Uganda is hurtling backwards towards the 15th century showing that Christian intolerance can be as bad as anyone else's

Apparently Ugandan scientists have shown that homosexuality is a learned behaviour which can be unlearned.

No disrespect to that country but when's the last time you saw a headline that begins with: "Ugandan Scientists Discover _________________"...

The sponsor of the bill, MP David Bahati, insisted homosexuality was a "behaviour that can be learned and can be unlearned".

"Homosexuality is just bad behaviour, that should not be allowed in our society," he told the BBC's Newsday programme.

"Homosexuality's bad, M'kay?"

15th century? I'm pretty sure they just have to go back a couple of to the 19th or 20th century.

You're quite right, I was indulging in hyperbole.

However, Uganda is not a good place to be at the moment. The Lord's Resistance Army is killing, mutilating and selling people into slavery. Child abuse is quite routine among domestic servants. Poverty is rife and getting worse. Torture and informal executions are standard operating practice in the security services.

I love the part where they want to extradite Ugandan citizens who are homosexuals in other countries back to Uganda for punishment.

Isn't the majority religion catholic? Where the hell is Pope Francis on this?

This is utterly barbaric and should be condemned in the strongest terms.

Shows what you know.

Just last week they discovered an amazing new technology that can be be used as a light source, for cooking meat, warming your cave, and scaring away predators.

BC report suggested the President was not entirely comfortable with the new law but signed it anyway. Poor thing!

Said that will be reviewed if can be scientifically proved that homosexuals are born that way.

As someone else said, am waiting with baited breath to hear whether our wonderful churches try to intervene...........................................................................................................................................................................................................

In fairness, Uganda is sort of Africa light, especially around Entebbe and Kampala. I wouldn't want to drink the water but it's not South Sudan either.

I think most Christians would not recognize their faiths being practiced in Uganda. Even the Anglican services look like tent revivals or Pentecostals. They also have no issue with going to church on Sunday and practicing tribal beliefs on Monday.

I doubt the pope would have much impact on this.

Serious question.

I once brought up a pedophile comparison and people said its different because being gay is an act between two consenting adults. Everyone who is against homosexuality is against it because they believe its wrong and it has an effect on society that they don't like. Everyone who is for it doesn't really see an effect.

My question to you all is what about incest? Its illegal in every state except New Jersey.
What if people of incest wanted to start lobbying for rights and acceptance? Would you all have a problem with it? Two consenting adults, a brother and a sister or an uncle and a niece, doing the dirty? Would you say that would have an effect on our society? Where is the line drawn?

The difficulty I have with incest (assuming that suitable precautions against pregnancy have either been taken or are unnecessary) is that in many cases the relationship between the parties can draw into doubt whether consent has actually been given. Has the niece really consented or has she just been subjected to years of grooming by her uncle who is abusing his relationship ?

What's really sad here is that they're worrying about what consenting adults do yet women who go out alone at night regularly get the **** raped out of them. Seems like if you were going to fix a social ill that might be higher on the list. After that they might go after the witch doctors who engage in human sacrifice and maiming children for body parts used in their rituals. The prioritization here strikes me as odd.
