Hi I am new and have just had fun following the Achau Nguyen thread. My question is, has anyone, ever, come even close to showing any results? Or for that matter , has anyone ever gotten past the prelims?

I am looking for someone to guide me to some interesting cases in this forum. It is just too big to wander around in even with the "search" feature.

Where are the interesting cases?

Thanks

As far as I know, no one has passed the preliminary. As for the challenges, you can read the Challenge Application thread. Also of note is an article by Mr. Randi in the latest Skeptical Inquirer magazine, in which he discusses some of the more interesting challenges.

My opinion? The interesting cases are the current ones.

Based on information from Kramer, there have been somewhat more than 350 challenge applications submitted since the challenge was formalized at $1,000,000. As for how many test have been undertaken, he only has knowledge of those taking place since he began working with the JREF a little over a year ago. If I am accounting them correctly, there have been 4 preliminary tests in the past 18 months. That's out of several dozen applications. No applicant has ever passed a preliminary test and proceeded to the claimant stage of the testing.

Thanks -

Thanks for the replies, they were greatly helpful.

I was very dishearten to learn that for as long as this challange has been open not a single human on earth can demonstate what you would think is common place if you are to believe TV ( X-files and their ilk) or go to India where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting someone claiming to have mystic powers.

Oh well - what was I expecting anyway?

I think you will find that in the vast majority of cases, the proponents of these mystical claims know in themselves they have nothing, but they want others to believe they do have something, so they can get paid. Money is usually the underlying factor in all this. Confidence trickery is just their method.

Welcome Nzmose,

You have an inquiring mind, and you have come to a good place to exercise it. Please look though the many threads you will see here and follow links to get an idea of what we are about. As you have already surmised, things are not the way they are portrayed on TV.

Have fun,
IXP

My question is, has anyone, ever, come even close to showing any results?

What is fascinating in every case, the applicant (or potential applicant) has seen or experienced for themselves the results, or deceived others with some sleight-of-hand or illusion, yet they cannot reproduce their claim in a properly-designed forum with impartial observers.

This is why James Randi has no big problem of offering to pay one million dollars. The money is very secure in the bank vault you see him standing in front of there in the picture from JREF Challenge webpage.

Best cases:
TC Albin
Paul Carey
John Maguire
Donna Khoury
Jeffrey Johnson (Jetstream)
Jill Enquist (I AM NOT HUMAN)

Dude, this stuff just cannot be made up.
Reading these forums is even better than watching tv (and no commercial interruptions)
