Most (not all) of them are open-invitation. Or sometimes paid-entry. Such as renting out a club for a night, and charging a cover-charge. You just have to have the nerve to show up and fit in, that's all!

It helps greatly of course to have a member of the opposite sex with you that is also into the same scene.

Once you start doing that, you start getting to know people. Just like you would in any other activity. Getting to know people means getting informed about other events going on in the scene. Just like any other activity.
