I've been talking to a PETA supporter, and merely wish to point out some of the darker elements related to the organization, such as violent acts and hypocritical behavior by prominent members.

Short of pointing this person to Penn & Tellers "BS", does anyone have any information readily available that looks critically at some of PETA's actions?

Very funny article which demonstrates the people of New Haven are a tough crowd.

PETA accused of animal cruelty.

Another link

http://www.frizzensparks.com/archives/000218.html

"Even if animal research resulted in a cure for AIDS, we'd be against it."- Ingrid Newkirk Co-Founder of PETA, and Mary-Beth Sweetland (a diabetic who uses insulin gathered from animal sources to control her disease): She concedes that her medicine "still contains some animal products -- and I have no qualms about it ... I don't see myself as a hypocrite. I need my life to fight for the rights of animals"

PETA, a tax exempt non-profit organization, has in recent years spent quite a large amount of money on the legal defense of criminals like Rodney Coronado of the ALF (Animal Liberation Front) who was convicted of firebombing a research lab at Michigan State University. (PETA Tax return exerpts here, and here).

Josh Harper, Seattle anarchist afilliated with the ALF and convicted of assulting a police officer. (PETA tax return exerpt here.)

And again with a link to the ALF, a donation to David Wilson (former ALF spokesman). (PETA tax return exerpt here.)

Quotes from animal rights activists here: http://www.fatpet.com/elvessa/rights.html

"The $10,000 microscope was destroyed in about 10 seconds with a steel wrecking bar we purchased ... for less than $5. We consider that a pretty good return on our investment. (ALF memo about destruction of lab at U. of Oregon Oct. 1986)

We feel that animals have the same rights as a retarded human child -- Alex Pacheco, Director, PETA

Arson, property destruction, burglary and theft are 'acceptable crimes' when used for the animal cause. -- Alex Pacheco, Director, PETA.

I would be overjoyed when the first scientist is killed by a liberation activist. -- Vivien Smith of ALF

That's some scary stuff.

I particularly like the part where they are opposed to AIDS research if it involves animals, and yet she is okay with using insulin, which comes from animals, to keep herself alive.

Every group has a lunatic fringe. Its not fair to paint the whole organization on the acts of a few outliers.

We're not talking about "a few outliers," we're talking about the organization's leadership.

Organizations are never really led by moderate members cause a moderate member wouldnt bother with wanting to lead.

If you disagee with PETA eat veal. Veal is good for you.
If someone could come up with a good cat recipe I'd be all for that.

PETA has also recently been outed as having killed thousands of animals that it supposedly "rescued" from shelters. The story has been in most of the major news services; and should be easy to find. The link below has a good collection of the information availble through mainstream sources.

Not to mention the numerous ecoterrorist acts commited by their members and supporters.

Hardly a "lunatic fringe". Read their charter, for Zarqon's sake.

I haven't seen any proof anywhere that PeTA has noble intentions in the slightest. You need to separate "animal welfare" organizations (good and nice) from "animal rights organizations," who often oppose service animals like guide dogs, oppose pets period, completely oppose the eating of fish and flesh, oppose medical testing with animals, think it's okay to hurt people and burn down medical labs to 'save the animals,' etc.

Phil, here is a big page of tax returns you can poke around in.

Be careful with this, a lot of the anti-PETA literature is as deceptive as PETA itself.

petakillsanimals.com, for example, is a project of the Center for Consumer Freedom, which is a tobacco and food industry advocacy group with some seriously shady dealings of its own.

Thanks folks. Good stuff.

I'm surprised by some of the things I've learned. Very eye opening.

She has to be able to keep up the good fight! I would bet they against the flu vaccine too.

That may be, but what does it's own shady dealings have to do with the claim it makes? That is, the claim that PETA euthanizes animals? Are you claiming this isn't so?
