Naughty pagans upset God's children

Here’s a thing….

In my humble City, in Tassie, the local council has seen fit to erect a nice viewing platform at the mouth of the Mersey River.
Along with this, they have proposed a rather spiffing statue for the point, which resembles a sea god type thingy, and, in my opinion won’t be a bad look at all, as the entrance to our widely used tourist port could use a bit of polishing.

Now look what’s happened.

The following is a quote ,verbatim, from our paper’s letters to the editor, (I can’t find the link, but check out www.theadvocate.com.au , you may be able to.) Also a story here:
These letters, (some kookier than this), have been flowing in on a regular basis, and now the council is in damage control mode, and may rethink the idea.
Hopefully not.
I have thought about writing a supporting (for the statue) letter, and generally poking a bit of fun, but a lot of these people, and their contacts are customers of mine, and in a small city like this, it can amount to a bit of a problem.

Just 2 months ago, a local builder, who is a member of a large church here, spread a rumour around town, and their Parish that I and my business partner were gay-The only reason I found out was that an ex client I quizzed as to why she is an ex client, made a comment to the effect that she would rather not deal with us after she had heard this.
I said, that it would be news to my wife and child, also my colleague’s wife and 3 kids might be a little surprised as well!

All this came about when I attended a creationism meeting (another story), and disagreed with the absolute crap that the speaker was trying to feed to the uneducated masses that attended.

I suppose that I may be taking the "Sceptical crusader"thing a bit far ,at times, but it craps me off no end to hear the nonsense these people chant.

Anyway, does anybody have any suggestions?
Does anybody want to write some letters? You can do this on the web on the site.

Anyway, here’ s one of the letters (sigh)

Quote:
“ A Giant 11 metre statue and water feature has been proposed by the Devonport Lions Club that will take “shame of place” at the mouth of the Mersey River.
If this feature is allowed to be erected,it attacks the beliefs of every Christian who lives in, or visits, Devonport.
Instead of a showpiece to be proud of, it will represent just how far society has wandered from God.
There are no blessings for the people when a “pagan god” is exalted.
Lions Club members explore good, creative ideas that we can all be proud of, not offended and ashamed of.
The proposed Poseidon/Neptune statue isn’t one of those ideas.

It's just a bloody statue, Tony.

Errr... sorry to all those trying to access the link I gave, it seems to be timing out, why, I don't know....

Maybe God is upset....

Try later when Beelzebub's shift starts.

A somewhat off topic , tangential aside...

INAL, but it seems you've been slandered. On the one hand, you probably still have a good customer base, but if you are bleeding customers, I'd see if you can get some written statements from your ex-customers regarding the slanderous statements and also consult a lawyer about pursuing a civil case for slander OTOH, you'd probably need to leave town after the dust settles down.

Damn, it costs so much to prove that you've been wronged...

Yeah,I thought about the legal thing, but when I heard it, I nearly cacked myself laughing.

I ended up ringing the builder, and asked very tersely to cease and desist, lest I consider my options re taking it further, one of which would be legal action.

I received an apology which I have accepted.

My colleague, i fear, may not be so tolerant.

That sucks (about the statue, but the slander isn't so much fun either).

Near my house the manhole covers consist of a picture of a cherub-like face blowing wind (I think it's supposed to be the West Wind). They've been like that for years, but recently some people have been complaining about the 'pagan' symbolism. :(

I hope nothing comes of it, I love having that sort of stuff in public space.

... But its ok to have those biblically based stories and statues all over the place?

And what a charming representative of Christianity that builder is!

My kids elementary school’s mascot was “The Titans” until some bible thumping co#ksu#kers decided that a heroic mythological figure was satanic.

Not to hijack the thread, but...

Isn't it ironic that these are usually the same people who claim that using Native American's as sports mascots is "no big deal" and wail and nash their teeth about "PC police" when they are replaced.

I guess "poltical correctness" is OK as long as it's done by right-wingers, right?

(Not that I really mind using Native American symbolism in sports iconography myself, as long as it isn't cartoonish or disrespectful. I just found the hypocricy a little too obvious.)

Ya might as well hijack it, as the site I linked to is down, apparently they are working on it.
sorry guys!
There was a rather nice pic of the statue there as well.

Buggar.

The sooner these Christians stop acting like they own the place and speak for us all the better. Speaking as a Jedi, I'd love to see a whopping great statue of a pagan sea-god, it'd certainly liven a place up.

Oh, brother.

Interesting that Christian objections to the gods of Greco-Roman mythology were not always so strident. J. S. Bach, probably the greatest composer of Christian sacred music, wrote plenty of secular vocal works that had Greek gods and goddesses as characters. This was apparently a pretty common practice in his time -- the characters were recognized as being clearly mythical, and therefore not to be taken seriously.

Maybe the average Christian nowadays is not as secure in his faith as people a few hundred years ago.

And then the jeebusers have the nerve to call the right wing talk shows and say something about how persecuted they are.

How can it be a pagan symbol if the religion is dead?

Poseidon/Neptune are mythological symbols.

Perhaps a compromise.... PINK UNICORN
