Hey guys, take a look at this site:
http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/index.php

I understand they also have a facebook page (I am not on facebook so I can't provide further info or link).

From a quick look at the website it looks like there is woo on this site, especially when you look at their research page:
http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/researchgistudy.php

Andrew Wakefield is listed as a consultant there, so my woo bell is going off (the study info is also setting woo bell off).

I don't know if there is anything that can be done to counter the website woo, but perhaps something can be done on facebook.

Can anyone help here? If they are a portal for woo I would love to see some skeptic action on this. I may have to break down and join facebook (I don't want to) if I keep finding these things.

It's a five-alarm fire of woo, I'm afraid:

[FONT=Verdana, Helvetica, Arial] Work with a variety of professionals including allopathic, naturopathic, chiropractic, Ayurvedic, homeopathic and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners. For instance, children with autism should not take most over-the-counter medicines. Instead homeopathic remedies can be safely used to treat all the cuts, scraps, coughs, insect bites and other minor maladies our children are susceptible to. Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine botanicals are marvelous for treating fevers, yeast, and parasites. Many chiropractors are trained in cranial sacral therapy, a form of manipulation which has been very helpful for many children with autism.

Complete and utter nonsense and actively dangerous to the child.

What is this, and is it as painful to the victim as it sounds?

It is a homeopathic head massage. Not painful, but completely useless.

Yes, the NAA is a total loon bin. According to this blog posting:
http://autismdiva.blogspot.com/2007/07/national-autism-association.html ... it used to be called "Moms on a Mission for Autism."

For fun, check out how the NAA is discussed here. Especially when the NAA decided to accuse a researcher who came up with data they did not like, so they decided that a charitable organization was actually a pharmaceutical company: http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2006/04/well_that_didnt_take_long_the.php ...
Oooh, Shattuck received money from the evil Merck to support his training! Except that the Merck we're talking about seems to be not the evil drug company but rather a nonprofit organization, the John Merck Fund, which supports research into a variety of areas, particularly developmental disabilities.

Here are more enlightening posts about the NAA:

... and there is lots more!

Meh, just another place where they peddle their woo woo. I bet you get banned if you try to introduce any query for evidence. That might interfere with profit making on the part of the peddlers. They get a woonaticky if you do that.

I have never been on facebook, so I don't know what would happen there. I would be quite willing to be banned from their page to have the chance to ask for evidence ;)

yeah, it's kind of funny when they do that too. They'll erase your posts, and leave theirs, like what happenend on the AVN facebook page when folks here tried to post some non-woonacy there.

I have a fake name there on facebook, but haven't tried going on any woo woo pages like that yet. There's enough trolls on the skeptical pages that others have set up. And nobody bans the woo woos from them, so the fun is never ending...

I've found the association's Facebook group. Creepy place... on the surface it's such a serious site and appears to do so much good (and with the name, The National Autism Association, it's obviously the first choice of many parents), and then beneath the surface it's alternative treatments, conspiracy theories and other nonsense.

We have our Grandson who just turned 5 with Autism on a Magnetic sleep Pad that has improved his Vocabulary, I have also put to other Autistict Boys on a Magnetic sleep Pad and they both have improved with language. I put Sean on Lactoferrin Gold 1.8 today to see how is does. i meet a Woman who put her 9 year old boy o......n this and after a couple of weeks he was talking for the first time. Lactoferrin Gold 1.8 enhances the body's natural antioxidant response. And as a Prebiotic it stimulate the growth of Probiotic that helps to improve the Body's Natural Defenses. I will post when I have results to share.Read More
The "read more" at the end told me this was a spammed ad more than genuine feedback, and sure enough, I found the same message posted at several regional sub-groups.

Some chatter on ABA therapy - is this another alternative treatment?
