My PS2 is on strike

Yup. PS2, my lifeline to sanity, my source of entertainment, my beloved DVD player, is not working. I clean it about every 50 hours of use with a dry cleaner, but now it's not reading the disc. The TV screen even says "not reading disc."

SONY offered to repair it for $105. $105.... I may as well buy a refurbished one.

What to do what to do?

Nah, you need to use a wet cleaner. Like putting it in the washing machine! That will get it clean. Very clean! :D

Thanks folks for the advice (except Cynical's stupid comments). I did just what the guides said and it works again. The only worry is, I have 2 left over screws when I put it back together. But nothing rattles when I shake the PS2...
 
That means you still left out two screws, Suezoled. Aren't you tempted to try again to see where they belong? Something will probably go wrong again.

Hey, Suzy, what have you got against me all of a sudden? Surely you don't have a problem with me, just because I'm curious about the name "Flodin"....heck, CF should take that as a compliment.

You seem to have real problem with names. Don't call me Suzy you twit. You haven't earned any right to call me by a buddy-name.

And I don't have anything against you all of the sudden; you've been on my "stupid" list for quite a while.
 
Well, excuse me, SUEZOLED. As I remember, we had a very pleasant conversation once. I guess when I offended you, it was like poking at a rattlesnake.

I certainly didn't mean Suzy as a buddy name. It's just easier on the fingers. How about "Sue" as in "A Boy Named Sue"...because I'm convinced you are male.

It would rattle if you put in two extra screws.

Probably no need to worry. I've taken apart and put back together hundreds of things in my time. If you don't have parts left over, how else you you keep your parts box stocked?

well I did check and found where the screws go. It didn't need those two screws from what I could see. But I popped one back in and kept the other as a spare. I dropped that screw in my spare box, too.

It's a rule of electronics repair that you will always end up with at least one more spare screw than you started with.

As long as you have the spare screw and it's not running around loose inside the case somewhere, it's usually no problem.

Just wanted to impart that my 9-year-old son got a used PS2 as a Christmas gift from a young (21 going on 12) male relative...

It was given because the PS2 had stopped working (great gift).

Anyway, we had the same "cannot read disc" error that everyone seems to get eventually.

I found a website (not the one I posted unfortunately) that gave step by step instructions on how to clean the optical (I used alcohol instead of air).

Put the thing back together and VIOLA! my son has a working PS2 now.

You can also buy a replacement optical for it for about $60, I think. It's a bit pricey but beats buying an entirely new PS2.

I don't want to start a religious war here, but really, a GameCube has even fewer good titles than the Xbox. And that's really saying something.
 
Not to drag out the subject, going to make a short point:

If you play by yourself, then PS2 is definitely the better choice.
If you enjoy having friends over and playing with them, then Gamecube has better multiplayer.

If you don't have any friends in real life, but like playing with other people, then get an Xbox.
