Murdoch Exploits 9/11 for Kerry Smear

In a naked attempt to exploit the September 11 attacks for partisan political gain, Rupert Murdoch's New York Post ran a deceptive front-page headline on its October 30 edition that declared that Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden "Urges Bush Defeat."

Of course, the taped message from bin Laden played on Al-Jazeera (10/29/04) did not call for George W. Bush's defeat. Indeed, toward the end of the message, bin Laden declares, "Your security is not in the hands of Kerry or Bush."

This is a good example of Murdoch's Fox motto "fair and balanced" (tm).

The New York Post is just slightly more journalistic than "The News of the World".

I think perhaps FAIR jumped the gun on this one as a an accurate and full transcript probably wasn't available.

As you can see its a long diatribe against Bush. The last statement says neither of them can protect us, but the gyst of the article is "Bush is a lying, deceitful, deficit spending, war mongering, Halliburton helping, tool".

FAIR probably jumped the gun on this one. I don't think they are pulling a Media Matters.

See for yourself. While I think "OBL urges Bush defeat" isn't stated explicitly, its implied heavily and the Post being the sensational paper it is acted as normal.

You don't have to smear rupert murdoch when there is a much more mundane reason why they ran that headline.
