CHESAPEAKE — Two Mormon missionaries were shot, one fatally, Monday night while going door-to-door in the Deep Creek area. One missionary, age 21, died after being taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The other, 19, was in serious condition at the hospital Monday night, Chesapeake police said.

The missionaries where shot in the where?

Oh, Virginia. Never mind, then. The source doesn't quite explain why they were shot. The whole door-to-door thing is annoying, but that's no reason to kill anyone.

Yeah well, what else can you expect from the state TragicMonkey lives in?

Not just my state, my city, too. I might have had those very Mormons at my door at some point, they seem to get around a lot here. I never greeted them with a hail of bullets, though. The worst I did was brandish a copy of "The Collected Works of Nietzsche" and tell them that they'd be better off reading that than their own ridiculous book.

I don't think they were at anyone's door step.

Anyway, if I could be bitter and cynical, I can hear my mormon relatives now expounding on the "blessing" of this tragedy. I can read the e-mail now about how he died "in service" or "serving" and something along the lines of God acting in ways we don't understand, blah, blah, blah.

Sorry, it's just that I've had my fill of ego-mormonism.

Too bad for that young man.

The Rocky Mountain News identified the man who was killed as Morgan W. Young, 21, of Bountiful, Utah.

Bountiful? Is that one of the polygamous compounds? I know the one here in BC is called Bountiful. Might explain why someone took exception to their proselytizing.

Bountiful? Is that one of the polygamous compounds?
No. Bountiful is a city just north of Salt Lake City. The Polygamist compounds are in the rural areas of Utah. This is not to say that there are no polygamists or polygamist groups in Utah's city centers, there are. But they are much smaller and have little to no impact on the community.

Most Mormons take a very dim view of polygamists BTW.

Police described the shooter as a black male, about 5’10’’, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and jeans.

Oh sure. Is that about half the state? Someone who would shoot two unarmed missionaries in cold blood is a bad dude to have running around your neighborhood.

Now the old timey Mormons, they'd shoot back.
