More Vaccine BS

I can't believe that there are people out there who actually buy into some of this drivel. I heard about the case of the doctor who claimed that the MMR vaccine was linked with causing autism in kids and how he was disproved and subsequently struck off. That, to me, seemed like a pretty silly claim to make, particularly with no proof, but for some people to suggest that governments would actually set out to harm or even kill their general population is just ridiculous!

Also, you may notice that in countries where they don't have vaccination against certain diseases the mortality rates from said diseases tend to be significantly higher than in countries with. (Pretty big clue right there with regards to their effectiveness as far as I'm concerned)

Driving the claim upstream, here's the source article linked in the OP article
http://foodfreedom.wordpress.com/2011/07/09/bayer-and-death-1918-and-aspirin/

and here's the NIH article that is referenced by the above:
http://www.nih.gov/news/health/aug2008/niaid-19.htm

The majority of deaths during the influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 were not caused by the influenza virus acting alone, report researchers from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health. Instead, most victims succumbed to bacterial pneumonia following influenza virus infection. The pneumonia was caused when bacteria that normally inhabit the nose and throat invaded the lungs along a pathway created when the virus destroyed the cells that line the bronchial tubes and lungs.

It appears from my cursory research to be true that aspirin has some level of effect on the immune system, but this longer term effect does not appear to exceed the shrt-term effects of a viral infection on the body.

I read John Barry's book about the 1918 pandemic. Very interesting. People were not dying because of aspirin, but what you mention Apollo.

Actually Dohvakiin the corrupt origins of the anti-vax crusade are even darker than that. It wasn't just sloppy research, it was intentionally falsified research. Wakefield had been hired by a lawyer who was suing vaccine companies on behalf of families with autistic children. Wakefield also had a patent on an alternative measles vaccine which is a direct competitor to the one he trashed in his paper.

To get a rough idea of just how deep this rabbit hole goes here is a lovely webcomic version by tallguywrites.

And, of course, since it's posted on nsnbc, it's true. The hoax is over! Anyone know of a general debunking link for this? I know where to find links about wakefield, but this has a bunch of people saying, "seeeee!" and I'd like to be able to be lazy about it and post links, rather than having to comb through the entire thing and try to splain it to people who already believe it. Surely someone else has done this already? The comic is good, but doesn't really cover all of this article.
