Montague Keen from beyond the grave

Just when you thought it was safe... Montague Keen is back - and still talking out of his backside.

I was just watching 'This Morning' (a British programme for housewives and the unemployed), and I saw two people - one of them Keen's wife - ranting about their amazing double-blind mediumship tests which (of course) prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Monty Keen is 'out there'. Wooooo!

His crazy wife went on at length about how Keen materialised, walked around the room, took something out of someone's pocket, put it into someone else's shirt pocket, and then gave a speech. Alas, they didn't film it, but for some reason they had the foresight to make an audio recording instead. Fancy!

Apparently the 'evidence' will be shown at a presentation on sunday, and these two clowns will return to 'This Morning' on Monday to present this same evidence to the gullible British TV audiences. Might be worth watching if you like to watch stupid people make fools of themselves.

All it needs is make-up...

That'll be at the tribute to Montague Keen presented by the SPR at the Royal Society of Arts - a "historic moment in this kind of research", according to Prof Schwartz (towards the end of the interview).

davidh: Thanks for the clip - did you record it via a TV card?

Yup. I was getting bad reception but the low bitrate has actually smeared a lot of the noise out.

I work at a TV station, and the TV that I had on my desk broke, so I got a TV card :D

Ah! So he still has a body. Interesting.

Nah, superpsi is a plausible alternative hypothesis.

I've heard of these sort of things. Many bizarre claims . .hmmm

I think you're being a bit unkind. Don't pre-judge.

I try not to be, but the claims being made are so utterly ridiculous that it's hard to take them in the least bit seriously. I don't know if you watched the video clip, but it came across like a big joke.

If it turns out on Monday that they have amazing evidence, I shall take it all back.

I predicted this was going to happen.:)

Same modus operandi as Sir Oliver Lodge and Hodgson et al. 'coming through' after they died.

I guess the 'speech' that Monty gave would be supportive of mediumship. Maybe it was the one he was giving when he was, erm, interrupted by the reality of his own mortality.

It seems kind of sad to me in a way:( Exploitation of an exploiter, though?

Oh I see ... THAT is what scepticism is all about is it ?
You prejudge the issue before you've seen the evidence.
And then you present your case like some kind of supercilious intellectual, and seek plaudits from like-minded (i.e. equally closed-minded) people.

People like you give scepticism a bad name !

Oh give it a break. Keen was a hard-boiled looney when he was alive, his wife is just ensuring that his legacy goes on (and on, and on).

If the evidence is good, I'll pay attention - but I know better than to blindly accept the ramblings of anyone closely connected to Monty Keen. I'd bet money that they show a few pathetic photographs (possibly featuring orbs) and some faked audio recordings. Possibly something Keen helped to fake before his death, perhaps not. No camcorder footage of apparitions of course, because that's too expensive to fake properly. Only an imbecile would take that sort of 'evidence' at face value.

And incidentally, yes, that's what skepticism is all about. Being skeptical. That's kind of the point.

Im neither unemployed nor a housewife ,but Ive just seen Mrs Keen on the follow up to the programme on Friday(which I didnt see)with Prof Gary Schwartz. As you rightly predicted Infinite Ocean, there was some dodgy audio and that was it!! A load of waffle from herself about brilliant mediums-giving a code word apparently-seances.The medium had met Montague Keen(quelle suprise!)Although the voice was Monty when he had heart surgery!? He spoke usual twaddle about afterlife(amazing etc)Interesting quote from Schwartz:"Mediums are willing to come out of the seance room and be tested.." Queue starts here..
Have emailed the programme, see if I get a reply.

I saw the follow-up program last night (Sky+ is great!).
The actual audio tape sounds like her husband, says the widow Veronica. I thought it sounded far more like Sir John Gielgud myself! The 'bottom of my heart' reference is something that I'm sure a great many husbands say to their wives - I know I do, sometimes even when I'm sober.

However one thing did stand out for me - the callous disregard that Mrs Keen's circle of friends have for her feelings.

This lady has just lost her husband. She is visibly grieving and distressed. So what do her friends do? They bring him back for her. I have deep sympathy for this poor woman. Psychologically, she will never be able to complete the mourning period because her beloved husband hasn't actually gone, in her mind.

Nobody has considered that this lady is not thinking quite straight at the moment and is understandably clutching at any straw handed to her.
Schwartz is parading her round the media like some kind of trophy.

You say that as if it's a bad thing.

I notice Ms Holohan from the Police and Psychics thread is involved.

It would not be "bad" at all, if they really brought him back. The onus is on those who claim this is possible. So far, no evidence of spirit communication exists.

Holohan, who was completely debunked, yes.

 Claus, there is plenty of evidence. It's just that you refuse to (want to) see it.
