a ballot initiative for the following

Without transgressing the First Amendment, officially acknowledge Mississippi as a predominantly Christian and quintessentially Southern state in her population, character, culture, history, and heritage — and officially acknowledge the importance of the Holy Bible and prayer to the people of Mississippi!

Provide an English-only policy throughout government and public services in Mississippi!
(Besides saving some money, an added plus for all city, county, and state telephone lines will be:
No more pressing “1” for English.)

Always display the Mississippi flag in front of public buildings!

Enable the State Flag Salute, following the Pledge of Allegiance to the national flag!
(The State Flag Salute is: “I salute the flag of Mississippi and the sovereign state for which it stands with pride in her history and achievements and with confidence in her future under the guidance of Almighty God.”)

Make “Dixie” the official state song!

Let Ole Miss keep Colonel Reb and the names “Rebels” and “Ole Miss”!

Let MSU keep Bully the Bulldog and the cowbell!

Annually proclaim April to be “Confederate Heritage Month” in Mississippi, and secure the last Monday in April as the statewide holiday of “Confederate Memorial Day”!

In honor of the Mississippians who served under this military flag, allow the Confederate Battle Flag to be displayed on the state capitol grounds, directly behind the monument to Confederate women!

They grow em' stupid down there, don't they?

If Mississippi really were "a predominantly Christian and quintessentially Southern state in her population, character, culture, history, and heritage" then it wouldn't need to have special announcements to that effect enacted into law.

It's like having to have a vote for a declaration that you're attractive. You either are or you aren't, having it officially declared adds nothing if it's true, and does nothing to make it true if it isn't.

What would acknowledging that Mississippi is "predominantly Christian" accomplish?

(Apart from them making themselves feel better about themselves?)

Without transgressing the First Amendment, officially transgress the First Amendment.

Add to that, intentionally making life harder for non-English speakers and throwing pride in a slave state in the faces of African American citizens.

The terms "narrow-minded" and "hateful" come to mind.

Anyone know what the chances are for this initiative? Is it just a stupid thing that a few people managed to get on the ballot, or does it really have a lot of support?

I'm kinda surprised they don't already celebrate Confederate Memorial Day. Georgia does; they don't talk about it much, but all state offices are closed.

I think they think that to "officially acknowledge," by statute, the predominantly Christian culture here* would give them a foot in the door to eventually make it also a political predominance. Then they can enact law based on it- transgressing, in fact, the 1st Amendment.

*Yes, I live in Mississippi. I wish I had a way out; right now, I don't. But, TBF, a few years ago, an anti-abortion-rights "personhood for fetuses" amendment failed here by a pretty comfortable margin; it could be that there are still enough folks in Mississippi sensible enough to see this initiative for the parochial grandstanding nonsense that it is.

"Let MSU keep Bully the Bulldog and the cowbell!"

Um, is this an issue?

Knew there had been some complaints about the noise cowbells make, but I thought the bigger issue was the mascot and more overtly racist traditions of Ole Miss (Confederate flag, the plantation owner mascot, etc).

Now I live in Missouri, but I am from Mississippi, this entire initiative sounds just like something cooked up in Mississippi.

"Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven."

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full."

That page always seems to be missing from their bibles.

After 150 years they still haven't figured out they lost the war.

Enable the State Flag Salute, following the Pledge of Allegiance

Would that be the same Pledge of Allegiance written by a socialist?

ETA: And is this the salute they're talking about?

I was born in Oxford and my father taught at Ole Miss. Funny how many people here have a Mississippi connection. Anyway, is it up to the state what mascot a school has? Wasn't it the University's decision to change the flag and get rid of Colonel Rebel?
