I think this only encourages piracy. Microsoft finally offers a family pack (3 OS upgrades at a discount price) and then kill it after it sells out. Great move especially when other OSes that consumers could install are free. And in this age of netbooks most people care about very simple tasks like text, internet, photo viewing and possibly light manipulation, and video watching. They don't need a fancy OS that costs a premium. But even if they did want Windows 7 MS killed the only economical way for a family to all upgrade their systems. $150 for the family pack vs $120 per upgrade.

Does anyone know if software piracy causes insurance payouts or can be written off as a loss?

Because if it does/can (or both), then I understand why nobody has shot for better anti-piracy methods yet.

edit but leaving it intact: "causes insurance payouts", heh

For $700 you can get an MSDN Operating Systems subscription, which allows one person to activate Windows 7 Ultimate on up to 10 computers.

However, it is licensed for development and testing purposes, only. It is NOT legal for use by different members of a family. So, I would not go that route, if I were you.

Forget that I ever brought it up.

TechNet is cheaper ($250 with on-line coupons) and also has 10 activations for Windows 7. (Basically the same licensing issues as MSDN, however)

If you're a person who works for or is in the business of being a solutions provider, you could also get a MAPS (Microsoft Action Pack Subscription) for licenses you are allowed to use in-house legally, but there are limitations to production use (a company can't get a MAPS and use the server software for their production servers, IIRC).

Or you could wait a year, get a pre-installed version for a song and then have to work tech-guru magic to move your hard drive.
