New York City Skeptics is proud to co-sponsor Michael Shermer's lecture "The Mind of the Market: Compassionate Apes, Competitive Humans, and Other Tales from Evolutionary Economics" at the New York Academy of Sciences.

Author and psychologist Michael Shermer will lecture and host a book-signing reception for his latest book, The Mind of the Market: Compassionate Apes, Competitive Humans, and Other Tales from Evolutionary Economics, at the New York Academy of Sciences as part of the Science & the City Author Series.

In this eye-opening exploration, Dr. Shermer uncovers the evolutionary roots of our economic behavior. How did we make the leap from ancient hunter-gatherers to modern consumers and traders? Why do people get so emotional and irrational about bottom line financial and business decisions? Is the capitalist marketplace a sort of Darwinian organism that evolved through natural selection?

Michael Shermer is the author of nine previous books, including the bestselling Why People Believe Weird Things. He is a columnist for Scientific American, the publisher of Skeptic magazine, and the founder and director of the International Skeptics Society.

Wait a minute..... 7 World Trade Center?! Did they rebuild that, already?!

Yes they did. I have to admit it will be very weird and a bit unsettling but I'd rather suck it up and just use the tower as any other than to make it a place of nothing but terrorist memories.

Aaaaaawwwww crap!!!

I'm gonna be out of town by then

Yeah, it will be kinda cool being in that building, actually.

I must have been living in a cave, though, because I thought they weren't going to finish that building until next year. I didn't realize it was already done last year.

I guess I don't visit that part of NYC very often.

Excellent. Just got my ticket. I saw Dawkins there last year when he was on his The God Delusion book tour (and got my copy signed). Great, intimate venue (can't be more than 150 seats) and even the food and wine afterward were good.

Okay, so I'd like to RSVP but I am not sure if I will be bringing one friend with me or two. So it'll be either two of us or three. Who do I tell and is this okay?

For those who haven't been there yet, the NYAS facility in 7 World Trade is simply gorgeous. I'm excited to see it this week as it will be the first time seeing it at night. See you guys there...

The New York Academy of Sciences is handling registration for this event (and all proceeds go to them). I suggest contacting them at nymeetings@nyas.org with questions.

Well, that was a relatively good event! Standing room only, with a few good insights, chuckles, and friends. And the herbed cheese was not bad, either.

Shermer's presentation was, in fact, substantially better than the early version he attempted to give at TAM5. I think the lack of PowerPoint actually helped.

Now I feel even worse that I ended up not going. Both my friends pulled out on me and I didn't feel like jackassing to new york city all by my self for the better part of the day to see one presentation.

I knida figured I'd regreat it though,,

Very good event. I was just expecting a reading but it was more like a classroom lecture (and I mean that in a good way).

And it was great to meet Shermer and get my book signed. Very nice, friendly gentleman.

Also glad I got to meet some of the guys from the New York Skeptics. They're doing some really cool things.

Thanks for coming everyone! Shermer was great, as usual, and the lecture was very well attended (sold out, in fact). And yes, we are doing some cool things, now that I think about it. :-)

Will have some more cool things to announce later today, in fact..

Yes, infinitely better than TAM 5! And the view of Lower Manhattan from the NYAS is simply stunning.

Agreed on all the comments about the event above. It was also great to see my old friend HarryKeogh at the reception afterwards!

Why is it whenever I run into JREF'ers somewhere I usually have a drink in my hand? Hmmm....
