Penultimate Amazing
In Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, a character notes that "the blood of a thousand Christs" wouldn't save Mexico, and other than the God aspect that isn't far wrong.
As late of the 1960's, there were still death orders out on some of the Mexican's that had ridden with leaders that didn't align with the group that seized power after the fall of Diaz.
Guy's that escaped to the North kept a low profile, and in one family I grew up with they had two old guys in the family that rarely left the house - the Priest would come and do confessions and communions, they'd sit in the back of the building but not on the porch. Eventually one of the old timers passed, and I and some of the other kids that went to that funeral were amazed to see all the photos they displayed of him as a young man geared up in the manner of the day and fighting for the revolution. The kid that was our age told us that because he wouldn't sign on with the new patrons they tried to kill him and he made it out of Mexico w/ the clothes on his back. The other old guy was a cousin in the same boat. My father told me he had heard of this, but I was skeptical that 50 + years later they'd still be in danger. My old man informed me that the Mexicans are just as good at holding grudges as the Sicilians.
What we're seeing in the modern day is simply what has pretty much been the sop in Mexico forver, just spread around the world electronically.
