[Merged]No link between THIMEROSAL AND AUTISM

I predict a lot of responses along these lines as well: "the research author's cousin's wife's boss's friend blah blah blah BIG PHARMA. And anyway, how does that explain blah blah blah anecdotal evidence blah blah blah."

No link between THIMEROSAL AND AUTISM

Good news everyone! Science daily has an interesting piece about how thimerosal has no link with autism.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080107181551.htm

"Although insufficient time has passed to calculate the prevalence of autism for children 6 years and older born after 2000, the prevalence at ages 3 to 5 years has increased monotonically for each birth year since 1999, during which period exposure to thimerosal has been reduced,"

I don't think the anti-vaccination crowd will listen however. They will probably continue saying thimerosal is is the culprit because there is no other "reasonable sounding" explanation as to why vaccines are bad.

Was there a corrolation between vaccines, mercury or otherwise, and autism?

No correlation at all has been found between vaccines and autism but that is what the anti-vaccine crowd has been all about for the most part. Any time an anti-vaccine story has been on the news they always claim it is the mercury based thimerosal which causes autism and that's why they don't want vaccines given to their children.

it was a classic case of correlation being confused with causality. Autism diagnoses increased every year and so did number of vaccinations. Some some immediately concluded that the thimerosal with mercury caused the increase. Even when the correlation was shown to be an artifact due to a third variable, the true believers persisted. Even when thimerosal was removed from all but some flu vaccines 6 years ago and the correlation disappeared, they still are at it.

It's like when King Heathen (from youtube) was converted from Atheism to the Church of the Flying spaghetti monster and he showed the correlation between pirates and global warming:

1. As the number of pirates in the world has decreased global warming has increased.
2. When do we see the most pirates these days? Halloween. What happens shortly after Halloween? It gets cold.

Therefore the lack of pirates in the world is the cause of global warming.

Not sure which of his videos has it but do check out all of King Heathen's stuff. I particularily his "arguing with theists" videos.

Put another way, the epidemiological analysis doesn't prove that thimerosal exposure cannot cause individual cases of autism. It simply provides evidence that it's unlikely thimerosal can be the sole cause in all cases.
"Epidemiological evidence?" You mean the fact that they TOOK THIMEROSOL OUT and the AUTISM DIDN'T STOP???

Honestly, the average IQ is 100.

My daughter has Asperger's Syndrome and she did have a reaction to the three step whooping cough vaccine. So much so that the Doc decided against the third injection. I can't say I noticed her having a problem after the MMR injection.

Like many autistic kids she does have gut problems (Ulcerative Colitis) and I saw an interesting programme which on one side said autism was caused by the gut problems which were triggered by the injections whereas another chap said autism caused the gut problems which made reaction to injections more likely and that perceived reactions to injections were not the problem but merely a symptom of an underlying problem.

The above sounds like a tale of woe when in fact she is a pretty, funny and very intelligent teen who has put the intense focus autism seems to confer into her rather striking drawing and art (and, according to her, avoiding homework) - wouldn't swap her for all the tea in China.

Perhaps we can see an end to silly trials like this one which is looking at mercury chelation therapy in autism.
As if there was not already enough evidence of the harm chelation can do.

I just googled what chelation is. Yikes! What is wrong with these people! I can understand why people could arrive at the conclusion that mercury causes autism (we can clearly see that high levels of mercury causes brain problems) and then Oprah and her guests talk about the (false) thimerasol/autism link. It gets a lot of press. Not to mention the "Big Pharma" conspiracy. But how could a rational person think that it's the "mercury" still in the body that makes your child autistic. As though it just stays there for ever and removing it will make things better all of a sudden. My goodness these children are NOT suffering form heavy metal poisoning!
