Well, here it is Melbourne Cup day, and the whole nation has gone horse mad.

Our local rag has found it fit to put on the SECOND page a story about a clairvoyant, and her tips for the cup....and a photo.

There they are, the crystal, the tarot cards, and the obligatory candle.

http://www.theadvocate.com.au/news.cgi?type=1&id=215234

This saddo has picked:
1.Makybe Diva......(the favorite, and everybody is backing her anyway, I actually said she'd win a long time ago.theres' the kiss of death already!!)

Also, it will be the last race she runs.VERY SPECIFIC.

2.Either Bazelle or Xcellent wil come second.

According to her, she has never picked a loser. We beleive you, yes,we do.

Waddya reckon, should I go for the trifecta?

She's been picked by the Universe to predict a horse race ya know.

Thats right. An immense amount of gas, rocks, ice and matter has chosen an insignificant speck on a tiny grain of sand, er planet,to foresee which boneyard refugee will cross a line first. It all makes sense to me.

The race is on this arvo, I will let you know how I go.

For mine, I like Vinnie Roe.The flying spaghetti monster told me.

She's only betting $5???? Well that just fills me with confidence. Did she ask the horses who would win? She was pretty vague about how she found out this vital information.

Still, I love to go to the races and especially if I can stand right next to the rail as the horses thunder by. :) Very exciting.

RANT!

I was driving to work the other day listening to the radio as usual and heard the vapid trio of idiots running the show tell us they were going to have a regular segment where some clairvoyant would be dropping in and favouring us all with her wisdom. They then asked people to call in and tell us about their visits to assorted psychics and relate all the wonderful advice they got. Naturally half a dozen people called up and gave us breathless descriptions of how their psychic knew everything and told them they would meet a tall dark stranger, come into money and travel.

Critical thinking is definitely not encouraged out there in the community!

I needed that little rant, thank you for your attention.

I predict more messages will be posted in the JREF forum.

Oooh yeah, now THERE'S confidence in your abilities. I think she actually looked in the mirror and asked the horses arse.

Sorry,that's nasty. (giggle)

Imagine if the universe bet on Makybe Diva, that would shorten the price a bit!
Bookies everywhere would be crappin' 'emselves.

Only 2 hours to the race, better get me bets on...............right.

I wonder if she'll get page two again if she is wrong.

Oh, that's not possible, is it?

I've done it scientifically looking at weights, jockeys, trainers, recent races etc.
Then I took out the dart board. :D

My conclusions:

1) DEMERGER
2) LEICA FALCON
3) RAILINGS

Makybe Diva won't even place.

LOOK HERE!

Results..

1.Makybe Diva...SO THE CRYSTAL WAS RIGHT!!!
(we will ignore the fact that she was short priced favourite and everybody in Oz thought the same))
2.On a Jeune...........MISS
3.Xcellent.....MISS. (Close does'nt count)

Now, wait until tomorrow, the paper will feature the chosen one, I'll bet.

Good Grief, sometimes I feel like screamin'

We will wait and see if the OTHER prediction comes true,(ie;the horses last race;mind you, would'nt you retire after winning a record 3 Melbourne Cups??)

So far, 1 out of 4.

I'm impressed.Not.

Oops too slow.

I predict she will claim a hit on Xcellent as it placed or ignore it as she may feel she left herself some wiggle room on the second.

As a point of interest....

I actually backed Makybe Diva, but was reluctant as she shortened into bad value.

I won a little bit.

I picked her the last two years running, (not joking!have the betting slips to prove it!), won a packet first time, not so much second time.

I'd like to point that fact out to the clairvoyant.

For a while I was a semi pro punter, but just about gave up last year, once you do the maths, long term overall winning does'nt happen.

Today was the first bet I've had for 8 months.

Zero out of three :(

In actual fact, I put my money on Makybe Diva for first/place
and Demerger for a first/place.
I came out ahead on my money at least.
(Makybe Diva was the hot favourite and was always going to be
hard to beat. The jockey rode her to perfection).

Morris,
I think Xcellent was not a complete miss to be fair.
If you put it in for a place, you would have had a return.

BJ

Alright, make it 3 out of 4 then.

Give her a million bucks.

She said second, as I recall, not a place....

Hope you made a killing. I backed Demerger as well, thought it would do better.

Don't think the universe liked it though.

If Xcellent had have run last (or even in the second half of the finishers), you would call it a complete miss, right? So third instead of second is not a complete miss. If she had a premonition that it was going to run second, they only way to back it would be for a place. And she would have won. She didn't of course so, in a sense, she is a loser as well (besides putting in only $5 on Makybe Diva).

Hope you made a killing.
A dollar each way. :D

I backed Demerger as well, thought it would do better.
Now, that must be more than a coincidence. We both backed Makybe Diva and Demerger! Or are you like my brother-in-law and back about half a dozen horses? (For the record, I backed only these two).

BillyJoe

Here it is folks, the FRONT PAGE......

http://www.theadvocate.com.au/index.cg

Don't think it is all on the website, but she is all over page 1 and 2, the headline says, WE TOLD YOU SO!!, and, we find out, surprise, surprise, that she has a business as a clairvoyant. How much would 2 days of page 2 and front page advertising cost MY business???? A bloody lot.

The facts as I see 'em.
1: Everybody in OZ picked Makybe Diva. Ask any bookie who has'nt topped himself by now.I picked her. (Hooray)
2: It was common knowledge in the racing industry that connections to Makybe Diva knew that if the horse won, it would be retired. There were several interviews where that was hinted at.
3:Xcellent did'nt come second. Full Stop
4: The other horse is still scratching it's arse at the starting gate.

How's this: I know somebody who picked the trifecta.Psychic??

Now, this clairvoyant who claims she sees angels etc. has predicted that Prime minister John Howard will have health problems in the next year.Oh. A 60+year old man may have health problems soon? How likely is that.

And, the really relevant info....Nicole Kidman will marry, not an Australian, but a foreigner!!! HOW COULD THIS BE?

How about a prediction about the next natural disaster, or terrorist attack? Go on, do something useful, that may save lives or something. Why does the universe care so much about Tom Cruise and his ex -wife??? AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!! What about Orlando Bloom?? and, and......Sheesh.

This has rattled my cage a bit.

Whaddya reckon, should I write a letter to the editor or is it a waste of time??

Anybody wish to write one as well??

Or should I just take a valium?

(OK,I'll come peacefully. I like your white coats. Ooh look, a yummy tablet.)

Morris,

I have learned to not let these things upset me - which is why I can calmly say that her choice of Xcellent for second palce was not a complete miss.
I don't think it's worth it.
I wouldn't reply because, let's face it, her supporters have more ammunition (of the "popular appeal" type) than you have in this particular case, even if only as the result of a lucky break.
I would suggest you just let it slide and fight your battle on another day.

BillyJoe

PS: This is really freaky, but I know someone who won the trifecta on last year's Melbourne Cup and picked Ist and 3rd this year.

Ok,Ok, I think I have calmed down a bit now.

I suppose you are right, the more noise I make, the longer it stays in the public eye.

I think that the free advertising, and blatant use of the press gripes me a bit.

Got my Meccano set.

Will build bridge.

Couldn't 'elp meself...

3 weeks later somebody wrote a letter to the editor, which prompted me to offer some support........complete waste of time, I know, but hey, I need a life.

Here's my contribution to sanity:

Jarrod Mckenna, (The Advocate 14/11) quite rightly questions the “Amazing Prediction” made in regard to the Melbourne Cup. Making an educated guess that matched 90% of the general public, and qualifying it with the retirement angle, which had been suggested before the race, hardly constitutes an amazing insight.Get someone to pick an obscure race at random, don’t look at the form guide, and make some predictions that come true, then we’ll be impressed.Do it more than once, under controlled conditions, then I predict you will be very rich indeed.By the way, only a $5 bet? There’s confidence in your abilities! End Quote/

Pissing in the wind comes to mind.

Sounds good!

Let's know if you get any responses.
If you don't, count it as a win.
