Democrats watch in awe as McConnell filibusters himself

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) introduced legislation to raise the debt ceiling on Thursday, apparently with the intent of showing that even Democrats would not support such a bill.

However, McConnell’s plan backfired after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) called for a vote on the legislation, which would have given the president the authority to raise the federal debt ceiling on his own. The top Senate Republican was forced to filibuster his own bill.

“What we have here is a case of Republicans here in the Senate once again not taking ‘yes’ for an answer,” Reid said, after McConnell announced his filibuster. “This morning the Republican leader asked consent to have a vote on this proposal, just now I told everyone we were willing to have that vote — up or down vote. Now the Republican leader objects to his own idea. So I guess we have a filibuster of his own bill, so I object.”​

Ha ha! I predict that on Jan 3, after Reid has changed the filibuster rule, Dems will introduce this exact bill again, and McConnell can stand in the well of the Senate and filibuster his own idea in the light of day.
 
For some reason, I don't think Fox News will be saying much about this.

I guess Mitch McConnell picked the wrong week to argue that filibuster reform was unnecessary.

In other news, Republican Congressmen propose approving a third foot because the other two are already full of bullet holes.
 
If this guy's sole reason for putting forth this bill was to create some future political talking point, and otherwise not representing his constituents or acting as an ethical legislator, I really think it should be considered a serious offense, and something should be done about it: censure, or expulsion, or something significant.
 
Well, on the fiscal cliff thread, someone is suggesting that Republicans should introduce legislation to extend the Bush tax cuts only on incomes under $250K because they think Obama would oppose it and he would look like the guy defending the wealthy. I have no idea why they suppose Obama would oppose such a measure when it concedes less of what Obama wanted than his last offer on taxes. :boggled:

And the person who said this seemed to be sincere.

I think they've been opposing anything Democrats proposed for so long, they assume Democrats will oppose anything Republicans propose.

ETA: Either that, or their new negotiation strategy is to pretend to be completely insane and somehow catch Democrats off guard with some clever ploy!

Reid initially rejected it but after talking it over with other dems, decided to go ahead.

Ah--that makes sense. And when Reid decided to go ahead, McConnell now wants to block his own proposal.

But the way it was reported in the OP linked article was that McConnell made his own debt ceiling proposal. The other story says that McConnell merely called for a vote on Geithner's proposal (in order to say Democrats would vote against it proving it wasn't a serious offer).

It seems it was a proposal that was modeled on something he presented that the president liked & when it was presented by the WH it was "ridiculous".

ETA: Now I hearing that the one I posted was the first thing McConnell brought up & Reid dismissed it. McConnell was so chuffed he stared Reid down he tried it again with just the debt ceiling & Reid dismissed it then called his bluff.

I have no idea wth is going on.

Sounds like he still doesn't like it. I still don't quite understand why he proposed it. He thought it would go down in flames and that would somehow make the Democrats look bad. :confused:

Seriously. Isn't it curious? Democrats would love to permanently disarm the debt ceiling time bomb. Did McConnell really think that Democrats would vote against this because they're afraid of what Republicans would say about them? He's kind of stuck in 2010/11. Needs to come up to date.
