I thought you'd all like a look at this. It's a vidseo of a martial artist trying to use his magic powers to protect himself from his own razor sharp machete. I can't even begin to imagine what would have to be going through your mind for you to not only think that this could work but to actually take a razor sharp machete and hack at your own arm with it!

Luckily he doesn't lose a limb, but he possibly deserves to. This video isn't for the faint hearted.

Have a look here.

I think somewhere in all his flashy flashing he was supposed to flip the blade over so he would hit his arm with the back and unsharpened side of the blade then do some more flashy stuff so this would be hidden from the watchers. Or he really believed himself.

Anyway, cameras must really be evil because they always spoil people's psychic powers and scare away bigfoots.

Both sides of the blade were sharpened as he described "to save time" flipping the sword over to strike a second opponent.

Maybe the other times he did it he used a single-edged sword. In any event, he's an idiot.

but if you look, only the top third or so of the blade is sharpened on the "back", it may be possible that he was aiming to hit himself with the blunt part of the back of the blade, and missed.

This scene is from a BBC TV show "Mind, Body and Kick Ass Moves" which is probably the least skeptical show I have ever seen on TV, I'm surprised that they showed a failure like this.

I'll have to forward this link to one of the guys from my sword class. He cut his foot by dropping a sword on it, which isn't nearly as stupid as this fellow.

I have seen a similar feat attempted (with success) in some breaking contests (bricks and such) in which people lie on swords or get hit with large sticks. I am not quite sure what he thought was going to happen here.

This clip shows both the credulous nature of the TV show, and a "successful" demonstration of similar claims.

I'm unimpressed, for a couple of reasons.

1) 'Razor sharp' knives are rarely very sharp. :D
2) Knives are really just saws with very tiny teeth. They don't cut well unless the blade is drawn across the object being cut.

I've often amazed and frighten my friends by pounding one their 'sharp' hunting/butcher/chef's knives gleefully against my forearm. :jaw-dropp

You just have to be careful that you don't

a) hit really hard with a truly razor sharp one, and
b) don't ever, ever, 'draw' it across the skin.

I suspect that the 'martial artist' in the video violated rule 'b'.
