Sometimes you look at a contentious situation and have to wonder about the sanity of the people on both sides of the issue. Take the furor over the Dutch film on Islam. Who is more crazy, the Muslims threatening violence over it or Dutch MP Geert Wilders?

BBC article on film here.

"Mr Wilders says the film is about the Koran but has given few details.

In the past, he has called for the Koran to be banned and likened it to Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf. "

Wilders is crazier, but only slightly. (he is leader of the Dutch "Freedom" party)

General agreement in the Netherlands is that the angry Muslims are wrong and Wilders is a f*$%îng lunatic...

I wonder why they can't make a South Park episode about Islam that is just as barbed as the one about Scientology or Jesus? Why can't they have as thick a skin as we do? They don't like it? Tough. It's freedom of speech. I am just as offended by what they do and what they believe and what they say every day. They worship a child molestor as a "prophet." They don't tolerate other religions AT ALL in Saudi and Iran and other Islamic countries. Religion and its taboos are not optional, but are mandatory upon pain of death.

Parker and Stone probably would if they were allowed. Remember they did a Mohammed cartoon episode but the network wouldn't let them show the prophet.

Mohammed did make an appearance as one of the "Super Best Friends" though.

He is still calling for banning the Koran. Half a year ago, he proposed the Koran be edited to not contain aggravating bits, and that it then would be "as thin as a Donald Duck magazine".

He's been calling about this film now for three months. Fewer and fewer people here think the film's for real :D. With the hype built up by him, it can only become an outright hate-speech thing or an anti-climax.

Last Friday, Christian-democat Foreign Minister Verhagen called upon Wilders not to release his film. This caused rage among their Labour Party coalition partner. So a whole Friday govt. meeting wasted on this issue, I guess .

The "Freedom Party" is Wilders and 8 nitwits without any political experience. And half a million dumb and/or deluded voters.

I don't know who is crazier. From the article:
On Sunday, hundreds of Afghans took to the streets in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif to protest against the film.

Demonstrators burned Dutch flags, and called for the withdrawal of Dutch troops from the Nato force.

The protesters also criticised the recent republication of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad in several Danish newspapers, and called for the withdrawal of Danish troops.
Dutch radio this morning reported that most demonstrators were some kind of muslim priests, not at all the average local population. And that many demonstrators didn't even know the basics what they were protesting against; e.g., that they thought Wilders was from Denmark and the cartoons from Holland.

Agree with the angry Muslims. There's barely a word about this from the Dutch muslim community, BTW. Wilders a lunatic: yes, but a dangerous lunatic.

Nicely and succinctly put.:D

As a twist, I read last week that the KRO (Roman Catholic Broadcasting Organisation) is considering making a similar movie centered around biblical quotes. Now that's ballsy... :D

That I would like to see....if they go through with it.

Unfortunately, after some checking I did, it turns out that the newspaper reporting on this should have checked it's facts better.

As it turned out it was just an idea they were kicking around the boardroom...:(

Freedom of speech is the higher principle. Muslims need to grow a thicker skin.

did you not read the story? Yes, Freedom of speech is the higher principle. So Wilders should not be demanding a book to be banned. And Muslims should shut up too. Why did you just focus on the Muslim side of this?

Southpark - the greatest TV series ever. The one on Mormonism is unmissable

http://www.southparkzone.com/index.php watch it here, season 7

Saudi Arabia yes, but Iran does allow for the possession of wine and spirits by Christians. Just don't be Jewish, Baha'i, Zoroastrian...

Excellent point.

It is important to note the distinction between what he wants (book to be banned) and what those particular Muslims want (his death), but the basic principle of censorship is the same. If he had called for the death of Muslims then they'd be precisely equal. However, I suspect someone as right-wing as him has secret desires along those lines anyway.
