Just an anecdote to demonstrate that you don't need a gun to get criminals to stop a crime, often you just need to let them know they are being observed and will be caught by the police because they have been identified.

I am sure that most of those instances that are quoted of a crime being prevented by use of a gun in the infamous US study would have just as easily have been prevented if the person was unarmed.

Police said the woman was walking along Sunshine Avenue in Keilor Downs about 10pm (AEDT) when a car with four men aboard drove past and they offered her a lift.

After she refused their invitation the car's driver pulled the vehicle up alongside her and the occupants got out and started attacking her.

The men pulled her to the ground and then started dragging her into their car.

Police said the men broke off their attack and fled after a passing motorist stopped behind the men's car and the driver flashed the headlights.

The woman escaped relatively unhurt

Yes and we could have all avoided WWII had we just all gotten taken over and used the Ghandi method. In the US our criminals would have attacked the driver of the car behind them as well. Meanwhile you still got four guys running around ready to try again.:p

Well, that makes it official.

AUP has just grasped at the last straw in the entire universe. Well done, sir.

In which case, you are calling for a shootout. Great. As for WWII, I don't quite see the connection. Is it something to do with the letter W?

You claim that things can be done without guns. I gave WWII and an alternative method. Mostly kidding with ya there, or is there a humor ban in your area?

Not calling for a shootout. Those should always be a very last resort. But you did make a claim as to incidents where guns were used and how they could have been avoided. But as I said, in the US the guy in the other car would have been attacked as well, but then in the US the chances are higher that he would have had a gun and could have kept the people at bay and there until cops arrived.

See? No shooting and the bad guys get caught. ;)

And yes it's all guess work, but hey that's all you had to offer so I am returning the favor.

How does he keep them at bay with a gun, without shooting. They are just going to drive off.

Or maybe they're afraid of getting shot and decide to hang around as jail ain't as bad a death? Seems to work for cops and a bunch of other people. If they go to leave, he has no need to shoot them though, but can you tell what kind of a mood the guy with the gun is in that day when he sees you attacking a woman?

You'd have been better served to just stick tot he one story and not play "guess the outcome of other crimes where guns were used to prevent them". You'd have had evidence that you can sometimes stop crimes with other methods. Instead you wanted to play the game and guess about incidents where guns were used.

When has anyone said otherwise? I myself have made that very point on numerous occasions. You wouldn't be setting up a strawman, would you?

And you are basing this on what, exactly?

You have a point here... assuming most attackers are vampires. Excellent idea!

Sure it would, just ask Ray Davies.

AUP, here in the USA there's an old expression, "Don't bring a light to a gun fight". ;)

That's just useless apologia from the creeps who think that having flashlights is supported by the constitution.

Do I have to mention the deaths from melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma? Light kills!

And if your asking yourself " Does he have ' Energizer ' ? ".. Well, why don't you find out?

Don't tempt him, people. Look under his name. He's an Illuminator.

From the title of this thread I thought I was going to get a story about someone being bludgeoned with a lamp.

"I know what your thinking, Does this flashlight run for five hours or six? In all the excitement I kinda lost track myself. So what you have to ask yourself is 'Do I feel lucky?' Well punk, Do ya?"
