Major University Defends Wakefield

Why haven't other studies shown a link between the MMR vaccine and autism?

Most vaccine safety studies have been epidemiological in nature. They examine large population-based datasets rather than individual autistic subjects. The latter type of study has revealed the central role of oxidative stress and inflammation, which could not be identified in epidemiological studies.
What? Who cares whether or not those studies prove cause. They would have at least shown correlation, and there was none. Am I missing something?

Yeah that is why I want to punch a wall right now. Its a *********** logical fallacy. If you prove cause you also by effect have to have correlation. Which means that if no correlation is found they can't possibly be related. Also, here is more information about this man:

This almost comes off to me as a breach of ethics.

I tend to agree with Ben Goldacre's assessment both of Wakefield and of the press- especially in the UK.
Having completely ignored contrary evidence and turned Wakefield's paper into a medical conspiracy theory, they are now only too happy to paint Wakefield as not just a villain, but the sole villain, of the piece.

Re the OP, the fact one person at a university supports Wakefield does not mean the university does. It would be just as wrong for me to say "North American supports Wakefield, ergo all north Americans do.

He had a nice photo with a white lab coat ugly sweater and he has initials after his name. Oh, and he wrote his bs in a very convincingly smooth way.

In other words, no. You are not missing anything.

And Richard Deth is a known nut. He is probably cashing in on his tenure. He also callled Kathleen Seidel personally to complain about what she wrote about him.

She also writes that he has been hired as an expert witness. So these latest developments are preventing him from cashing in as an expert witness.

(don't feel bad... while my university has Edgar Marcuse, it also includes the homeopath Jennifer Jacobs, whose work on trying to treat kids in Central America for diarrhea with homeopathy is selectively cited by Dana Ullman!)

If you have autism, you are most likely vaccinated.
If you are vaccinated, you do not most likely have autism.

Both statements are true, but they lead to different conclusions.

Based on the first statement, don't get vaccinated. You will get autism.
Second statement, get vaccinated you don't get autism.

This is the second time I've caught them doing something this stupid though. The PR department of the university is run by a bunch of idiots. It was kind of entertaining the first time though.
Relax - Northeastern is not a major university.
Yeah it is.

I think every university needs to have one token quack. UBC has [Chris Shaw]. He is convinced aluminum adjuvants in vaccines cause both Gulf War Syndrome and Autism.

Yeah it is.

No - it is not. NU, like BU, thrive on being in Boston and basking in the reflected global belief that Boston/Cambridge = world class education. Thus you get both NU and BU charging Harvard prices for a Quinnipiac degree. And I may have insulted Quinnipiac.

Except for the fact that Northeastern University has education programs that Harvard never does. Surprisingly, for the same reason that you idiotically deride the college.

Please drop the discussion of "what is a major university" or take it to another thread. Let's keep this one on-topic.

God dam it. I rather not say anything because I'm freaking pissed. I knew my university had an antivaxer as a faculty member but for ****s sake the university in its infinite stupidity decided to post his opinion of Wakefield on the front page of the university website.
http://www.northeastern.edu/news/stories/2011/01/deth.html
As Chris stated, Deth is a known anti-vax sympathiser and has shown up in the Omnibus Autism Proceedings as an 'expert witness' for the petitioners. He was reamed on cross and by other expert testimony. He also just returned from Jamaica for an anti-vaxx conference dressed up as 'vaccine safety' (lipstick, pig and all that). Guess who was also a speaker there?

I'd complain to the university that they are aligning themselves with a notorious sleaze, even though it was Deth who wrote the article. Or perhaps pop a rebuttal article off to them.
