Maajid Nawaz was beaten up by some moronic POS on the streets of London last night.

No embellishment, no nonsense narrative, consistent injuries, this really happened.

And Nawaz's response? Was is hatred for white people? Contempt for the country in which he lives? Demonisation of right-wingers?

Er, nope.

I’ll be okay. We grew up with this. It’s the life that forged us. Thank you to all who have privately message me. I just need some space and time alone right now. Goodnight all. I love my country.

At least in this case there's no doubt the attack occurred as reported.

But wait, what's this?

Some on the far-right are callously casting doubt on the fact that this racist attack even happened (apparently referencing an American actor called Jussie Smollet?).

Thanks, Jussie, you really struck a blow against empowered violent racists everywhere.

I assume the OP tends to include the impact of the Jussie Smollett affair on hate crimes, so I trust this is not a derail:

'Smollesting' certainly will empower conspiracy/fake news proponents everywhere. No matter how bizarre the theory, the racists can now point to JS and say 'look, it's not theory, the left already does this' (assuming the Smollett matter does play out as is being reported). JS is half Jewish, half black, and gay. That's a tough blow to three groups that are already targets and really did not need this.

We need to wait until the police have completed their investigation and issued an official statement. Judging the incident from the victim's initial claim is racist.

I have no doubt that this was a real attack - only the motives might be not as obvious as they seem at first glace.
Narawaz might have grown up with this, but he isn't exactly young anymore; hope he will be alright.

Yes, the most tragic thing about the Smollett hoax, is the fact that people will immediately think the next racial attack could be a hoax. It's how our brains work.

Smollett has basically screwed the next guy who actually does get beat up because he is gay or a minority, by a racist/homophobe.

While they will certainly reference that attack, conspiracy theorists don't need actual evidence before accusations of false flag. Pretty much every major mass shooting in the US is met with accusations of it being a false flag by the left to push a gun-control agenda.

Smollett was only the most recent and most prominent of a series of false martyrs that the conspiracy minded will point to as evidence that all inconvenient victims are liars. The fact that these false martyrs are fairly rare and usually easily discovered is not important to the conspiracy minded.

Indeed. And if the violent tendencies on the far right have half a brain (which is debatable) they'll use key elements of the Smollett hoax in their attacks, e.g. shouting improbable slogans, employing clichéd props, in order to cast doubt on the authenticity of the incident. Perhaps this attacker was emboldened by the Smollett hoax, who knows.

What is particularly worthy of comment, as I've touched on, is Nawaz's response in contrast to Smollett's hate-mongering and racism.

Nawaz said he does not wish to “harbour hate” for his attacker, who allegedly racially abused him, as he criticised “far-left” and “far-right” figures on social media for politicising his attack.

Nawaz said:
just returned home from the hospital after having my wound glued up. I owe a huge debt to the two lovely young witnesses (both white non-Muslims) male and female who called the police...

...People from all ethnicities and all faiths and none helped me yesterday...

.... I thank the police first responders (all of whom were white non-Muslims) for their professionalism...

He actually uses the attack to call for cohesion, not division.

His statements about the attack is actually pretty damning of society. "Hey, me and my people are subject to random attacks of violence based on our ethnicity. and that isn't going to change"

He didn't say that.

I assume this was Trump's fault.

I agree with this mostly although that seed was already in many brains. Every time this happens the seed get bigger even if though there will always be true cases too.

If you don't call out the problem, it won't.

I think he called out the problem admirably, and got people on-side who maybe wouldn't have been if he'd launched into a tirade against white people, or Conservative voters.

For the sake of argument, and because I'm honestly not sure I can agree with this... can you define how you determine these three groups to be targets?

I mean, I know there are attacks like the one on the synagogue and the black church by Dylan Roof and sometimes people get gay bashed and such, but is that enough to mean these groups "are targets" ? Perhaps...

But there are attacks on whites for racial reasons too, so are there any groups which aren't targets? Is it meaningful to be a group which is a target if every group is?

I'm fairly sure Jews and gays are subject to more attacks because of who / what they are than the average demographic.
