So, I was watching the History Channel's Monster Quest show on Alligators in NYC.

No sane person could actually make all of the statements that he made in the episode.

1st he claims that NYC covers up the "fact" that there is a breeding population of alligators in the NYC sewers. This is a huge insult to NYC, which gave MQ permission to explore the sewers, helped them explore the sewers, and let them interview people who work everyday in the sewers for years. Does that sound like NYC is real clandestine and horrible on this issue? Coleman's evidence of NYC covering it up is.......Urban legends!?!?!?!?! Great source Coleman, you can't even pull a specific person out that will say I know NYC is covering it up.

2nd he claims that a person once saw a dead alligator as something taken out of the sewer on display.... Wow, great evidence again Coleman...you can't even reference a single specific person for the evidence, and even if this is a true story, it makes sense that at some point in time in the country's biggest city that someone would flush an alligator down the sewer when it got too big. That doesn't mean that A) Alligators can live down there for extended periods of time or B) There is a breeding population of alligators down there.

3rd he claims Alligators in NYC could have a huge population explosion any minute and they would start attacking and even eating humans. So Coleman can't produce one shred of reliable evidence that they even exist down there, yet he is willing to try and scare the public with the threat of their lives in order to gain more attention for himself? Pretty irresponsible.

Using Loren Coleman further diminishes this shows credibility.

Oh, and after all of the searching and interviews of people who have worked in the sewers for years -- ZERO alligators.

I guess the question to answer is whether he really believes much of what he says. I doubt he does. It's all about money and ego.

There are a number of similar individuals in the crypto field. Some were believers at one time who no longer believe but don't have the courage to admit it, some are in it for the money, some are purely ego-driven, and some are dealing with all 3 issues.

Good thread, Wildback. GT's right, I think. I don't think Coleman believes half of what he says but he's sure willing to plug a book and take some donations for his house... err... the museum.

BTW, I would suggest the following tags for your thread:

Loren Coleman, MonsterQuest, Cryptomundo, cryptozoology, sewer alligators.

While focusing on the 'gators, he completely misses the mutant humans that've been living there forever. Sheesh!

M.

Why just NYC ? why can't these critters live in the bowels of any large metropolis ?

Anyways.

After reading several threads like this one, I've come to the conclusion that the American version of history Channel is radically different than the Canadian one and as a result I haven't seem Monster Quest.

Sounds interesting though.

Sylvia Browne, Uri Geller, Jack Chick, the ID folks, the UFOhunters guys...
Are they sane?

Coleman's statements are probably based largely on the information noted in the "modern" section of this wikipedia article. To clarify, I'm saying that he's using the same information noted in the article and not that he used the Wikipedia article itself.

Yeah, with that article, Coleman still has no sane reason (unless he is deliberately distorting and lying) to jump to:

1) There currently is a breeding population of alligators.

2) That breeding population will soon explode in numbers and start eating people.

3) NYC knows of the breeding population of alligators in its sewers and secretly covers it up, despite the fact that NYC gave MonsterQuest persmission to search the sewers, helped them search the sewers with equipment, and interview employees that have worked in the sewers for years.

Loren Coleman is either a fool or a lying scum bag.

If opinions, theories and claims without factual backing bring into question the sanity of a person then I can name a lot of insane people in a lot of high places.

I suppose we are all a little insane. :)

However, there is a difference between an opinion and using scare tactics to get attention (alligators will start eating new yorkers) and making false accusations with no evidence (NYC despite helping with the search is covering up the alligator breeding population).

That's because sewer gators can sense cameras, and are smarter and shyer than the typical gator, smarter even than most humans.

Until you prove they don't exist, we have to assume they do. Fair is fair.

Or??

The two choices are not mutually exclusive. The possibility exists that both apply. ;)

You would think if they had an issue like this anywhere it would be somewhere warm like LA or Vegas.

Good point, at least the temperatures of those locations more closely approximate the temperatures in an alligators natural range. Not that I know anything about the temperatures of the water in NYC sewers, but given the BYC climate in the winter, warm doesn't immediately spring to mind.
