Living without God

My local paper is running a series this week on Religion. It was refreshing to see them dedicate a day to those who live without it. According to my local paper, "The Summit Daily", 78% of the 24,000 residents claim no religious affiliation.

I am not sure I would want to be identified as an Atheist in my local paper but applaud those who are brave enough. We do have our share of devoutly religious people so I look forward to reading the inevitable letters to the editor.

BTW, Summit County is located in the mountains of Colorado.

From the article
Dillon resident Mary Baker (not her real name because she is afraid of being a known atheist) said she keeps her atheist beliefs to herself because she comes from a conservative background. She said she has deeply religious friends who might look upon her differently if they knew.

That's an attitude that understand. Atheism, especially in the south, is one of the best ways to lose friends.

I keep my athieism quiet at work since the person I'm working with likes her Jesus. I have absolutely no intention of getting into a conversation with her on the topic of religion and I think I've made it clear by changing the subject when ever it's come up. It's pretty apparent that if I let it slip, things would not be comfortable.

My family knows I'm an athiest and lets me be. There was an incidence where a gay couple was married in my grandfather's church (Episcopal) and so the council was trying to make rules from preventing it from happening again. One of the ideas they wanted to implement was that one of the parties would have to have been a member of the church for six months. My grandfather objected strenuously to that. After all, what if I came back and wanted to marry my lapsed-Catholic boyfriend in the church. As her recounted this to my mother, she stopped him and amusedly asked, "Your athiest granddaughter?" To which he replied, "Yes, and if she wants to get married, she can get married in my church." He, too, likes his religion.

Outside of that, aside from the screaming, short, Hispanic lady, I've been able to be open about it (when it comes up) and have people either react like my family in not really caring or simply saying, "Well I disagree and I believe."

Hey Dude. It's Summit County. Even the God Fearin' © Christians are pot smoking snowboarders. And coke-sniffing, orgy in the hot-tub Hedonists of monastic proportions.

That combined with oxygen deprivation make it a very mellow place to live.

Come visit us Riddick and find out for yourself. We even have a fundy christian church you can hang out in if you find the drug scene too boring. :p
