• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Little help, please. Maybe a virus?

Got an Asus EEE notebook which has been fine until today. Last night it locked up when I attempted to shut down, getting as far as the "windows is shutting down" blue screen, then staying like that for about ten minutes when I manually turned it off. Today it'll run fine for a couple of hours then freeze up. If I try to shutdown or go to standby, it freezes at the "windows is preparing to shut down/standby" screen.

The other thing is when I try to use Google, if I click on a search result, something is redirecting it to a website beginning with deneg.org that doesn't load. AVG is up to date but says there's no infection on the computer. Any ideas, anyone?

ETA: Oh, forgot to mention that when I boot the computer up again, my logins to forums have been lost. Don't know if that's relevant.

a quick google for deneg.org and looking it up indicates that it's really quite dodgy. That sort of behavior is common with malware, anyway. The standard repair method for Windows involves taking off and nuki, uh, reinstalling it.

Yep - anytime you bump into weird web browser redirects like that you can safely assume you have some sort of malware. Deneg.org redirect is pretty common.

I'd suggest you download and run malwarebytes, or go to majorgeeks and run through their "read and run first" steps.

Thank you kindly, both. I'll give those steps a try and see what happens. Nuking from orbit will be held in reserve.

Since AVG didn't catch this malware, I would suggest that your change you antivirus software. Malwarebytes is good but it doesn't offer real time protection (for free). Microsoft Security Essentials is very good (and free).

My experience with AVG has been poor. I'm a "family planning" malware avoidance user myself, but you'll certainly benefit from dtugg's advice if the malware you're working with here allows you to download and install them.

If you're going to reinstall windows, make sure to format your HDD. Don't just reinstall windows. It is safe to back up all your data that you wish to carry over to the new install. Worst comes to worst, make sure you've grabbed some of dtugg's programs *before* you put your old data back on. Most malware these days are BHO's however and you probably won't accidentally back it up, unless it's some program that you downloaded like weatherbug that's actually crouching tiger hidden malware.

After downloading and running everything suggested with no joy, I've brought in my pet computer expert (sister's fiance) after finding I couldn't work out how to reinstall from the partition on the HDD and I don't have an external DVD drive to run the disc. Hopefully, it'll be sorted in the next couple of days. Thanks for help/advice, folks.

Um, part of major geeks is to run combo fix and their version of HJT and then post to their forums, they then give you expert advice on how to fix it. As will the forums at HJT and Bleeping Computer.

But there is also the possibility of trying to reinstall the Windows files, but if it is a nasty booger like Vundo/Virtumonde, the nuke it may be best.

Correctamundo. I've had at least 2 versions of this Vundo, the first one was a mother. I had to run combofix and codmofix and a registry repair to get the whole darned thing. Nuking wasn't an option at the time.

Why can't they work towards good instead of evil?

It pays more to rent a botnet to someone.

For this occasion:

Now you see. Evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

The double facepalm comes out when the OS HOLY WARZ start in this thread.

Enough of this crap. Take the OS fanboyisms to another thread.
