It seems that the Democratic caucus in the Senate has decided not to yank Lieberman's chairmanship of the Homeland Security committee...

Lieberman keeps Homeland Security post

Senate Democrats have voted to allow Joseph Lieberman to keep his chairmanship of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee -- despite his support for John McCain and criticism of Barack Obama during the presidential race.

Lieberman's punishment for what many Democrats saw as an unacceptable betrayal: He will lose his seat on the Environment and Public Works Committee. ...

Good. Though I have been a strong Obama supporter and Lieberman's stance on the Iraq War has pissed me off, I think the Dems are being smart by not really going after him. Obama's advice to leave him be was well-founded, seeing as how he really does want to get to an era in DC of post-partisanship. Sometimes I think you really do have to let bygones be bygones.

Personally, I see this as a step in the right direction.

I wonder if this is a case of that old Arab saying about it is better having a camel inside the tent taking a leak outside then having a camel outside the tent taking a leak into the tent.

Well, I'm sure that's part of it. By keeping Lieberman - who votes most of the time with the Dems anyway, just not on the war - they add one to their caucus. Which makes it that much harder for the GOP to gain control of the Senate.

I don't think they could have done anything to him right now. As Mattus points out, if they kick him off of everything now, he goes into the Republican camp and they lose the majority until January 20th. After that, they have a majority without him so I'm not sure if there is something yet to come.

I know that Lieberman was pissed since the 2004 election, but him speaking at the RNC was over the top. I don't think his future is real bright right now.

Raw numbers aside, this has an added bonus of beginning to mend bridges that were in danger of being burned. Obama will have a lot of this ahead of him. It makes sense to start with the easy ones like Lieberman.

Plus, since Obama pushed keeping Lieberman, Lieberman now owes him one.

Hey, Obama has stated the Godfather is his favorite movie, looks as if he is following Don Corleone's policy of collecting favors.

Even though there have been plenty of times that I should have been embarrassed to be a democrat today is the first time I actually am. We are a party led by the spineless. Harry is a joke as a leader and Obama sure is seeming soft so far. LBJ is spinning in his grave along with Daley and Joe and Bobby Kennedy. None of them would have put up with joes crap.

This is just a stupid decision by the spineless. Joe is not a democrat period, I would much rather have Mel Martinez or Snow in his role if the dem's are hell bent on giving it to a republican. His stated policies on the economy, taxes and FP place him to the right of many republicans. But, here is why this is a bad decision. Joe said that a 60 Dems would be dangerous to America so right there he is saying that he will not work with the party. Never mind all of the betrayals to the party starting with Clinton's BJ, to basically killing any chance Gore had politically to win the Florida recount.

What do Arabs have to say about a camel defecating inside the tent and kicking it around on everyone?

Lieberman already owed Obama after Obama saved his seat in 2006. See how well that worked out. And lets not forget how Joe paid back Gore for picking him VP by killing any chance Gore had at winning politically the recount in Florida in his interview on Meet the Press. Joe is a snake and can not be trusted.

More like Frado so far at this point. Obama forgets who put him in office at his own peril. And so far it looks like he has. I hope he has fun fighting a two front war with the right wing hacks and the left wing blogs. He has been a huge disappointment so far. I could live with Emmanuel as COS, but now that it is looking like the Clinton White House with Hillary, Summers, Holder, and keeping Gates why did I bother to vote for him in the worthless florida primary and more important work for his victory? Might as well have voted for Hillary at this point.

I knew that the hard core lefties would turn on Obama if he was sincere about a bi partisan approach. And it is happening.

A majority of the American People?

That Obama is annoyning the hard liners in his own party is one reason why I actually like him more now then when I ..with many reservations..voted for him.

It would be one thing if he was filling the white house with bi partisan's but he isn't he is filling with only center and center right so far. Not one name so far has been center left. When Gates is the biggest liberal of the bunch I think there is a problem when it was the left that got him elected.

That is a cute reply but lacking in the fundamental truth on whom it was voting for him in the primaries that got him to the general and more importantly knocked on millions of doors, made millions of calls and raised millions of dollars.

So excuse me if we like to see someone besides David Axlerod that cares about our issues. The center and the right have ran this country since 1968 and we thought we would be heard. Most of us on the left agree with Obama's FP of soft force but we have a hawk at State. I would be a 1000 times happier with Luger in that role.

You think Lieberman votes according to what party he's pissed off at or happy with at the time, and not on the issues?

The rules of the current Senate would mean there is no change in chairmanships even if the Republicans gained a majority. So that would not be an issue. The dems lack spine so its not like they will do anything to him in the future either. He could run as a Republican in his next election and I would not be surprised to see a dozen Dems campaigning for him and Obama stopping by.

Lieberman actually owes Obama two since Obama helped him get reelected in 2006. I'm all for mending bridges, moving forward and all that pleasant talk but how many chances does Lieberman deserve? I understand that he has serious differences with the caucus on some issues but to go out and campaign for an opponent, then expect to share in the spoils of a victory you were against seems outrageous. This had better be his last chance.
