This week, the Internet is awash with reports on a study released by two researchers that would seem to indicate that exposure to electromagnetic fields is behind the recent upswing in the diagnosed cases of autism, the cruel neuro-development disorder impairing a child’s learning, social skills, and interaction with the environment. In brief, the theory goes that the EMFs interfere with cell membranes causing the retention of toxic heavy metals. Hence, a detoxification regime will help eliminate the metals and will improve a child’s symptoms. Various reports indicate that this study can be found in the “peer-reviewed” Australian Journal of Clinical Environmental Medicine or the Australasian Journal of Clinical Environmental Medicine.

I think this may be the trifecta of woo-claims. It combines Autism, electromagneticism and heavy metal toxicity.

:hb:

No mention of prenatal androgen overexposure, which from what I undestand is one of the most favoured explanations. Wonder why?
Sounds like woo to me.........

Hmmm.....

I can find no confirmation this journal actually exists except this. It's not listed in PubMed or Ovid.

The choice of forum for this research probably says all that anyone needs to know about the validity of the conclusions.

I listened to that SGU podcast yesterday, and it indeed was amusing and amazing how much woo was put into that study.

I think I'll design a study to test whether magnetic therapy works. But I'll use homeopathic principles and make the magnets only one iron atom, or sometimes none at all. To measure the effects, I'll pray for God to ESP me the results, and confirm that with Therapeutic Touch.

Yeah, maybe I can use the same protocol for my EMI tests. Think the FAA'll care?

Yeah I investigated this one. As mentioned there's not much evidence that the journal exists beyond being a rather small and fringe publication of a rather small group in Australia. The study was authored by some dude (who's name escapes me) who's founded his career on being a "whistle blower" on the dangers of wireless technology for the past few years. Also, the supposed mechanism which is causing the effects seen in the study is that it causes heavy metals to become embedded in brain cells> Which is... yeah... kinda out there.
