Large earthquake in Japan

Didn't feel anything here in Osaka, but a lot of people I know are saying that it was not just strong but lasted a long time. Of course, that is pretty subjective, but earthquakes that last more than a few seconds are always pretty disturbing.

First estimate is magnitude 7.1 apparently. Not so large maybe, but I felt it all the way down here in Yokohama.

Looks big to me!! Hoping everyone came out ok....off to read updates after this.

I have never been in any earthquake over 6.7 (Northridge, but over 40 miles from me)
In 1988 though I was pretty darn close to the Whittier earthquake, just 5.9.
Was on way to school and it felt like all the tires on the car blew out. Got out of the car and...wow, what a weird feeling standing on moving ground. The birds were going absolutely nutso.
7.1 is more than 10 times stronger than that one.

But damage depends on other factors other than the energy released, like depth from the surface.

It did feel like it lasted a long time to me. Probably less than a minute in actuality.

My daughter's phone sounded an alarm before we even felt it. I thought it might be a false alarm because it didn't actually start to shake until about 10 seconds later. I'm about 200 miles or 300 kilometers from the epicenter here.

It's actually pretty impressive how early some of the warnings come.

Definitely gives enough time to get under a table if not to pack the fine china in bubblewrap.

It's great to hear those alarms work but I'm not sure 10 seconds is enough to do more than recognize a quake is about to occur. Thinking it was a false alarm defeats the purpose, doesn't it? But next time you'll react more quickly.

They have a system here but I'm not sure it's up and running. I should look into getting the app.

We had a moderately large quake here years back, the Nisqually quake. No matter how many times I heard get under a table, don't try to get out, I still went for the exit. I did not want to be trapped under there if the building came down. I know it's the wrong thing but emotion overrode rational thinking.

Outside the ground literally went up and down. But I couldn't see anything that looked like a wave. We got away without much damage. When I got home only one thing fell off a shelf and my shelves are covered with things that could have fallen.

10 seconds would be an amazing warning time!!! For me, I get about 1-2 seconds warning because I can hear it coming...the there is a smaller movement that tells you you have another second to get where you need to go before the jolt starts. But they are all a bit unique.

Trust me. 7.1 is "Large" when you are sitting on top of it.

Lucky it was quite deep though.
