Penultimate Amazing
Just felt it. Apparently Northern Japan.
MASSIVE #EARTHQUAKE HERE!! #JAPAN
Graphic here.
7.1 - how strong is that?
First estimate is magnitude 7.1 apparently. Not so large maybe, but I felt it all the way down here in Yokohama.

Didn't feel anything here in Osaka, but a lot of people I know are saying that it was not just strong but lasted a long time. Of course, that is pretty subjective, but earthquakes that last more than a few seconds are always pretty disturbing.
It did feel like it lasted a long time to me. Probably less than a minute in actuality.
My daughter's phone sounded an alarm before we even felt it. I thought it might be a false alarm because it didn't actually start to shake until about 10 seconds later. I'm about 200 miles or 300 kilometers from the epicenter here.
Technically "decomissioning" which is an unbelievably long process. Disruptions or complications could still result in more consequences.Fortunately I believe the power plant is still shut down . . .

We had a moderately large quake here years back, the Nisqually quake. No matter how many times I heard get under a table, don't try to get out, I still went for the exit. I did not want to be trapped under there if the building came down. I know it's the wrong thing but emotion overrode rational thinking. It's actually pretty impressive how early some of the warnings come.
Definitely gives enough time to get under a table if not to pack the fine china in bubblewrap.
It's great to hear those alarms work but I'm not sure 10 seconds is enough to do more than recognize a quake is about to occur. Thinking it was a false alarm defeats the purpose, doesn't it? But next time you'll react more quickly.
They have a system here but I'm not sure it's up and running. I should look into getting the app.
