Well, the new hard drive arrived today and I just got the majority of my programs back to up and running status.

I lost all of my iTunes, so I've got to repurchase those. :(

I hate viruses... I really do.

did you bin the old hd? a usb enclosure is like 20 bucks and you may be able to recover the files from the other drive. (if a format wasn't done) I had a program get froggy with some system files when it thought it's free eval was up and wouldn't take the registration code that I bought! I had Lots of Pictures I hadn't burned to cd and tunes I didn't have archived and an extra 20 with the new HD saved them all. And now I have a 20 gig jump drive.

This is a really good suggestion. I have had a few problems with my laptop in the past and one of the best decisions that I made was putting together an external drive. The cost of the external enclosure and the drive from the toss bin at work have saved me countless times. Also I am sure that you can pull off your mp3s and such from the drive if you haven't already tossed it. Just if you attach it to your laptop make sure that you turn off the auto run features. Make sure that your virus files are up to date and give it a couple of good scans. There are a few good programs for pulling files off of drives that even arn't mountible. Sadly I am booted in FreeBSD right now and can't give you the suggestion that I have been using. If you are interested let me know and I will find the name of that program. It saved my arse by letting me recover about 70G of files that I almost lost when I botched up a partition table. A key though is just getting the external drive bay so you can safely work with it.

I feel your pain Mark, I really do. I update everyday with my AVG and religiously update and run my Spybot S & D, Adaware, and Windows Update, which I have set to automatic update, and to have it check once a week. I also use MS Anti-Spyware Beta for even more protection.

I am really careful and don't open up e-mail attachments unless I know who sent them. Learned the hard way, as my old Gateway of 6 years was destroyed by a virus. (and also a lot of use. But the virus hastended it's departure.) I try to leave NOTHING to chance now.

What's the storage capacity of your new hard drive? Did you have any trouble getting it?

Jeff

No, sadly I didn't save my drive. I figured that since it was pretty well fragged (Chkdsk found massive problems with it.), I tossed it.

I had no problems installing my new drive. With the exception of replacing the motherboard on my laptop, I do all of my own hardware/software installations, and this was as simple as sliding the new drive into the case, and tightening a couple of screws. From there on out, I was just a matter of reinstalling all the programs.

I'm finding that I have a bit of knack at this. It makes me seriously consider getting into IT, that is, if I can find the time and money to go back to school.

gah, just another reason I rarely use iTunes. At least emusic allows you to re-download files at no extra cost. BTW, you can burn iTunes encrypted files to CD/DVD as backup without DRM coming into play.

Try crying to Apple support, they probably have a policy on this although it maybe a crappy one.

Never bin a hard-drive without taking it apart for the magnets. HD's have reeeealy strong li'l magnets in 'em that cand come in handy. (Like for stopping pain and stuff. HA!:))
